But REED, what about the Roy that knocked out Jorge Vaca in '92? The talent was there, the power was there, but he was still gaining experience. Do you think it was enough experience to handle Jackson, or would it have been his immense talent? Thomas Tate and Gerald McClellan were the benchmark names at that time on Jackson's record; so, not exactly the beginning of his slide.

Yep. RJJ has a pretty impressive resume of benefits of the doubt. Besides, didn't RJJ beat at least one fighter who beat Jackson? That's good enough for me.

Julian Jackson was also under contract to Don King, and Roy would have had to sign a contract with King to face him. King had everyone under contract except for Hopkins, Roy, and Toney. I think McCallum was also not under contract with King, but I'm not sure. I know Mercado, McClellan, Benn, Eubank, Norris, and Jackson were. Does nobody remember King's middleweight tournament from the '90s? Hopkins was managed by Butch Lewis, and Jones was represented by Murad Muhammad, I think. Neither wanted to sign a long-term promo deal with King.

Yes. Pointing out that McCallum's old age didn't prevent RJJ from fighting him, whereas REEd suggests RJJ didn't fight Jackson because he was past it. It's a fair point by reed that mccallum remained somewhat relevant wheras jackson did not. But if you honestly think I "forgot" that RJJ fought McCallum, well I'd be surprised, and would've thought you knew me better than that.
I don't blame a young and green Jones for ducking a Julian Jackson. A fighter with Jackson's power isn't a smart fight for any up and coming fighter. A prime Jones vs Jackson though would have been a hellacious mismatch in jones' favour. Jackson may have been killed.
rumor had it that when jackson approached roy sr about a potential fight, roy sr responded something along the lines of 'i dont want my son to get hurt'. that was in the early 90s supposedly. i think jones would've fucked him up badly.
Yup, was about to say that the story is believable if the convo took place around '91/'92. To paraphrase Morgan Freeman/Million Dollar Baby, Roy Sr. protected his son right out of an NBC contract.
