Sergio Thompson had him down and hurt in round number 2. Linares gets up with a bad cut over his left eye. The doctor say's that he cannot continue. Is Linares' career as a championship level contender over?
I watched that fight last night on the spanish Fox channel. That was a bullshit stoppage to give their local mexican to win. In round one near the end, Linares got Thompson hurt and knocked him down. The ref called it a slip and when Linares was going to attack him, the ref tells him to go back to the corner (giving the mexican time to clear his head). Still Sergio "Yeyo" Thompson went back to his corner on shaky legs at the end of the round. Round two "Yeyo" did hurt Linares and he went down and got a cut from which he was bleeding, BUT after the count the ref ask the mexican doctor to look at the cut and the doc immediately waves off to stop the fight. I have seen worst cuts and the fights are not stopped. When the bout was ended, you could see that the corner of Linares had stopped the bleeding with vaseline. IMO this was a local job. About Thompson: he reminds me of Mayorga throwing wild punches, no defense, no technique. Antonio DeMarco will anihilate this bum in one round. As for Linares, he should not be discouraged by this setback and continue fighting since he was the victim of a hometown maneuver.
Linares didn't look good in that second round and was definitely hurt much more than Thompson in round one. Also Thompson was definitely not on shaky legs anymore when round one ended and it looked more like a slip than a KD to me. It was also a few seconds after the punches that actually hurt him.
Linares is weird, he looks/seems like a good fighter, but evidently is pretty much a scrub at world level. Do you think he's simply too fragile to compete at this level?
gotta love a mexican named thompson. if linares got fucked over by the locals he has only his predecessor to blame, the original El Nino Del Oro
World level? Sergio Thompson was an intended tune-up who boasted no notable wins (not even sure his losses came against anyone worth a damn). Linares' problem is he simply lacks punch resistance.
linares hasn't been the same since his shocking 1st round tko loss. i thought he looked average against rocky juarez and it wasn't a surprise when demarco caught up in the later roudns to stop him. or maybe he's had stamina/chin issues all along.
I know Thompson was a supposed gimme and I guess that proves the point even further. If he can't take punishment from Thompson, he's obviously not destined to beat any top fighter.
I gotta agree a few years ago Linares had a great potential, the video wasn't great but that stoppage looked a bit fishy..
