I rewatched this film with my daughter and now she is a Riddick fan. This is the coolest character Vin Diesel has ever played and this is his best film. This 2000 movie holds very well even though you can see its low budget production values mainly at the interior of the crashing spaceship. The plot moves at a proper pace slowly building the impending doom that the darkness represents for all the characters. All the actors here do merely an acceptable job since these are all grade C actors plus the script do not develop the characters enough except for a line or two. The monsters are still cool and thankfully were not designed to mimic the xenomorphs from ALIENS. Like I said before, Vin Diesel is perfect in this role even though his diction is horrible. But he is both dangerous and heroic and an enigma for the most part. Too bad the sequel sucked so much. I read somewhere there are plans for a third Riddick film, this time returning to the same premise of the first film. Pitch Black is a smart, suspenseful scifi/horror film that grabs you by the balls and don't let go. 7.5/10

    Great film.

Diesel being in it is irrelevant (although he did a good job), it's the CONCEPT of the film that made it great:

Planet with 3 suns and therefore 24hr sunlight. Creatures that are allergic to sunlight and therefore live underground only to emerge and kill everything on the planet during the month long solar eclipse which happens every 21 years.

I love that kinda science fiction shit!

Excellent film. I think it is right up there with Alien and The Thing.

The sequel was really stupid, unfortunately, because I think it was probably Diesel's best character and it could have made a neat series.

Alien is the better story and movie, imo, compared to Aliens. Aliens is decent. Pitch Black is better than Aliens and similar to Alien in how well it was done and in its story.

see i think AlienS is better than Alien and pitchblack cant touch any of them. Aliens is some of Cameron's best work.

PB is good tho. But it was a B movie that got a Cult Following. It's no masterpiece. Diesal's acting was laughable at times

The movie actually has a decent cast. No big stars, but Cole Hauser, Radha Mitchell and Keith David are all solid character actors.

Diesel was good, merely because he didn't have to express any emotions. Same way Arnold was good in T1 and T2, Keannu was good in the first "Matrix", and Sam Worthington was good in the last "Terminator" movie.

Not that I'm comparing him to either one.

He's got a little bit (not much) charisma, and decent comic timing. Not much else going for him though.

    Agree.

But strangely, I've seen both recently and "Alien" has actually held up better then "Aliens".

Maybe it was the version I saw, but "Alien" seemed like a much cleaner print.

Because they don't try to do too much, the FX hold up. "Aliens" now seems much clunkier then I remembered it being when it first came out.

I would guess that people who favor Aliens over Alien also favor Terminator 2 over Terminator and vice versa. Any exceptions here?

The sequels are a bit more glitzy thrillers and formulaic while the originals are more suspenseful and (not surprisingly) original to me.

    Hmmmm....

I give Alien the slight edge on Aliens, but do change my mind at times on this. It's darker, meaner and more dramatic. Aliens is more action packed....probably leading to more rewatchability I guess.

I rate Pitch Black JUST behind them in terms of overall film (acting, character development etc)...but Pitch Black has more rewatchability IMO.

Yeah, I didn't buy it. That was supposed to be Diesel showing us he could act.

He tried his damndest, but I couldn't help shake the feeling that he always looked like he was trying his damndest.........to act.

I disagree to an extent. Although I agree the concept made the film great and it could have carried the film without Diesel. I think that with the direction they took the film it wouldn't have been as good without Diesel.

Had they played it straight, like with Alien, then yeah, you don't need Diesel. But using the badass criminal who can kill aliens angle, they needed him. Personally I don't see many guys (at the time) who could have filled the role better then Diesel did. He came out looking like the next big action star, but it just didn't turn out that way for him.

I don't know. I think there's maybe a dozen other guys who would have made the role better then Diesel did.............granted, some wouldn't quite have fallen into the right time slot or salary scale at the time the movie was made.

Michael Jai White (my favorite most logical pick, though not box office friendly)

    Jason Scott Lee

Kurt Russell (from a couple years earlier, who starred in "Soldier")

    prime Arnold

Dwayne Johnson (maybe a little early for him)

    Bruce Willis

Patrick Swayze (don't laugh, Swayze from "Point Break" had 1000 times more charisma then Diesel ever had)

    Wesley Snipes

    Jason Statham

Nic Cage (LOL! I just think it would be fun to see Cage trying NOT to wig out during the entire movie)

    Barry Pepper

    Thomas Jane

I could probably go on if I racked my brain any harder.

No way the guys in bold could have done it. And if that was too early for the Rock, it's way too early for statham.

I already made a caveat that some guys wouldn't quite fit into the time line.

Other then that I'm not sure what Diesel brings to the table that any of these other guys couldn't have done.

.....and Statham had already done "Lock, Stock" and "Snatch" by then, so he was available, even if nobody actually saw him for that type of role until he did "Transporter".

Yeah but he wasnt the star in Lock, stock and shared the role in Snatch. He wasnt a main guy or nothing. I think Diesal's voice is what makes him perfect for this role. May sound stupid, but IMO it's what seperates from your list. Now dont get me wrong. The rock is better than Diesal in every way and would have made the movie better. But Diesal did well here.

That's why I gave the timeline exception. I know some of my choices are somewhat unconventional.

Diesel just bothers me man. I think I might have actually liked him at one time. "Pitch Black", "Boiler Room", "The Knockaround Guys", "Saving Private Ryan", I somewhat enjoyed him in all of them.

Then "XXX" and "The Faster and Furiouser" movies started coming out.............and he just fucking annoys me now. His voice, his bald head, his stagnant acting, his poor choice in movies.

He actually seems like a decent, funny guy in real life. I just can't get past the slop he's been making for the last 10 years.

I liked him in Fast and Furious, hate him in XXX. I do like the fact the Rock is now involved in the fast and furious frachise. Adds more crediblity to is.

I agree with Antaknee that Diesel's voice (aside from his build) was probably his biggest asset as far as making him perfect for the role.

As for him starring in slop the last 10 years, well you can't really blame him for the quality of the films. He didn't write them, just starred in them.

He certainly didn't make any of them better or more watchable. Hell, he wasn't even in the only "Fast and Furious" movie that was somewhat decent.

Well i liked Tokyo Drift the best too until i saw the last one with the Rock, which IMO was the best one. But honestly, it was the rock that made it good IMO.
