I'm a big Tyson fan but I try to be objective. I like to talk about how Mike Tyson did not have mental toughness because for the most part -- It's true. Some times, he showed heart. I forgot how brutal this fight was. I know it's edited and shows the highlights, but there are a lot of highlights.... Ruddock took a savage beating and Mike was not unscathed either! <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lcVJVvDTJeo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Tyson said after this fight he didn't want to fight anymore. He said Rudduck hit him in the jaw with a shot that broke his ribs. :say:
It wasn't quite the the same as Ali-Frazier 3. However i do believe it was one of those fights which diminshed both guys afterward. Both guys absorbed absolutely vicious bombs.
Its years since Ive watched it but the last time I did I came away with the impression Mike was trying to get DQd with low blows or at least was seriously flirting with following through with the idea
I'm not sure Tyson was diminished from the fight, but it was definitely some of the most amount of punishment he's ever absorbed in his career. And god prime Tyson was awesome. The speed and power on his hooks, from both hands, was just insane, and I love the way he can throw a hook from either hand, from pretty much any position and angle. Love those sneaky uppercuts inside too. BTW Not sure how this is a good example of Tyson lacking mental strength. He went to war, took some punishment, fought well, and won.
I mentioned how I liked pointing out how he lacked mental strength. This is a thread that made the exception and a slight cause for re-evaluating......
I used to love Tyson as a kid, and when I was a kid he always looked huge on TV. Shortish, but really beefy and wide. However when I watch Tyson now he just looks fucking small for a heavyweight, really. The weird thing is he doesn't even look that chunky, apart from his thighs. Just look at his arms and torso in this fight, it surprises me he even weighs 215. Ruddock is not only taller, he's thicker too, at least in the upper body. It makes it more amazing what a force he was at heavyweight. :kidcool:
juiced at 215 is holyfield. stocky and natural at 215 is tyson (maybe) tyson hit ruddock so hard on a couple of those shots that tyson wasn't able to followup because ruddock was on his ass recovering instead of hurt on his feet
Just rewatched some of this, horrendously brutal. Thankfully Tyson still moved his head a little back then and most the scary ones missed - like watching tracer bullets whistle past skulls, not even fun.
Tyson had some awesome body shots in that fight. That was not even the best Tyson out there and he still would have beat Lewis at that stage.
Man that shit was awesome heavyweight action. Both dudes throwing and landing bombs. The heavyweight division don't have monsters that get after it like these dudes used to do. I'll Holla 5000
I don't know about you guys, but it makes you realise there was once a wonderous time in boxing where top fighters would not only agree to fight each, but once they got in the ring they would - gasp - actually attack each other! Pretty commonplace too, for 2 fighters to be actually going right at each other, instead of the tepid "Fighting not to lose" that is so common today.
Yep. Part of it is how hard it is to fight not to lose against someone who's just as good as you are. You have to get some respect.
Lennox Pussy started the new pussy tradition of holding. It was started by that faggot Ali but brought back by Lennox pussy. In both cases, the bigger man held and fought like a pussy. Imagine Wald Pussy taking a single one of those shots and not having a panic attack. One thing about the Tyson/Ruddock series I never understood (then or now)is people thinking the fights were close or controversial . I thought the stoppage in the first fight was legit and I thought the rematch was Tyson beating the shit out of Ruddock with Ruddock showing heart in spots.
That was a big night back in the day, great memories. That was on a Friday night, lots of action bet on that fight. Very hard fought fight but not a great fight, but I do recall Razor getting dropped several times but he hit Mike with some big shots. It was after watching this fight that I knew that Evander Holyfield was the best heavyweight.
Why did you come to this conclusion? What was any different about the rematch compared to the first fight? At the time, I just felt Ruddock was probably the 2nd best heavy behind Tyson.
Fraud F*ckweather is more popular than Tyson and does bigger ppv numbers by fighting like a cunt though. So your logic doesn't hold here mex.:dunno: Fraud Cuntweather fights not to lose but he can get like a million+ ppv buys.
Ruddock would've been a great if he actually had fundamental boxing skills. He was a fairly poor boxer but a great puncher if he could set it up.
Youtube rules. I was going to paraphrase this ad, but I don't have to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMdoyDhy2RY It's the commercial for Tyson Ruddock 1 and well worth your 30 seconds. I thought the KO shot on Dokes was shown? Maybe that was a different version or maybe I'm just misrembering. hmmm.
It does kind of look that way. Those bodyshots were just brutal though. They sound like he's hitting him with a bat.
I had Holyfield over both of them, without question. He was a supreme fighter at that point in his career.
