I agree with you. It was tripe. iT WAS THE Lowest form of pseudo-profundity. Plus, I find the bugged eyed lead girl to be difficult to look at for hours.

I think Kubrick is one of the most overrated directors ever, maybe THE most overrated.

Clockwork Orange is sickmakingly pretentious and shit, and the only film of his I do quite like is Full Metal Jacket, and that's only because it's a bit less pretentious than the rest of his shit, and a bit more amusing.

 

A slap in the face of American suburbia is all well and good, as long as it is entertaining and not pretentious/stupid, which American Beauty wasn't & was respectively

 

I loved Donnie Darko, though. I didn't really see that as a pretentious film at all.

 

I watched Donnie Darko at the cinema, not having even heard of it previously, and I enjoyed it a lot.

In fact it even holds up on second viewing.

I don't get the pretentious thing either, it's not as if it seems like it's trying really hard to be cool and clever, and importantly, it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously.

It's a bit out there and nonsensical, but so what? Not all abstract paintings are contrived and pretentious.
