    THE TREE OF LIFE

    GENRE - DRAMA

    SCORE - 0/10

PREMISE - Was supposed to be about the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). But then I only know that from reading it in IMDB. Seeing the film I had no idea what it was about because there was no explanation and very little dialogue other than occasional preachy narration that seemed to be too clever for it's own good.

CRITIQUE - This one got a zero because I walked out after about 30-40 minutes in it. I actually wanted to leave sooner but my girlfriend gave it a few more minutes before agreeing with me. Like I said, no real dialogue, and was really just a bunch of images and visuals. The fact this has a 7.8 from IMDB's users shows what a bunch of hypocrites many of those guys can be. I think most of them are just trying to look all clever by saying they like it. Anyway the only part that did hold my interest was the cool couple scenes with the dinosaurs. Yeah, that statement should really have you scratching your head because this film is a drama set in the 1950's.

ADVICE - If you're considering seeing this I strongly suggest watching the trailer first and reading some reviews about what the film actually contains. I did neither and now I'm several hundred yen shorter for it. Oh well better to waste my money then my time.

I should have known you would. When it comes to movies you really are on some other shit.

To late, already saw Thin Red Line and you guessed it, I hated it.

Man have you watched that Confessions movie yet? This is like the 4th time I've asked you about it.

 I had a hard time finding a good copy of it. But i did find it. I am going to watch it tonight.

Malick is one of those directors you either love or hate. His movies are VERY slow. And most times nothing is even said. You just have to kind of see what he is saying without words.

I've been wanting to see this shit for months. Fucking couldn't find a movie theatre playing it in my area, and when I did and had to drive 40 minutes to get to some hole in the wall independent movie house...........they fucked up the start times and I still didn't get to see it.

Probably have to wait for it to hit PPV on my satellite.

I'll take Anthony's word over Lb for Lb's, since I'm a fan of Malick.

I know homie and the thing was I never heard of Malick nor did I know he has other movies similar to Thin Red Line. Basically me and the girlfriend wanted to go to the movies and she thought this would be good because of all the great reviews. I thought, "well it's a drama so I should like it" and didn't really read anything about it or watch the trailer. Either way a film like Tree Of Life shouldn't fall under the drama genre, it needs some knew type of genre discription but a drama that is not.

Anyone can hate any movie just as anyone can like any movie. It's pretty much all opinionated and everyone doesn't always share the same opinion as you.

Plus one thing I've noticed with this guy's films is people either really love them (obviously the ones who get it) or they really hate it (the ones who don't). Go through IMDB and look at the user reviews, most positives are mostly 8-10 stars and most negatives rate at 1-4 stars with most being 1 for the negatives.

Having such an unconventional style, it should be really obvious why some wouldn't like Thin Red Line, it's not like it's a straight-story type of film. Anthony seems to understand that; but you seem to think anyone who disagrees wih yours and his taste in that film is nuts?

Yeah man. Malick you either love him or hate him. I rarely find someone that kind of likes it or kind of hates it. Lb i COMPLETELY understand people not liking Malick.

Finally caught it the other night.

I'll admit, I liked it, but I didn't love it as much as I thought I might.

Lots of great moments and visuals. The elements for a cohesive story, without having to be a completely traditional plotline was there.

Creation of the Galaxy, Solar System, Earth, Life, Dinosaurs was ok, and fit as a sort of metaphor of the events in microcosm of the actual story we are shown.

I loved the c. 50's/60's stuff with Pitt, Chastain and the boys. I identified with the family and neighborhood dynamic, as I'm sure a lot of people who grew up in the 70's and earlier might also.

I feel like the Sean Penn storyline could have been cut out entirely. I understand why it was there, but it was little more then a distraction.

I wish Malick had filled in the 50's storyline, quite a bit more.

Malick films grow on me, so I might like it more next time I watch it, or the time after that. For now I give it a:

    7/10

ask me again in a couple years I might shoot it up to an 8 or a 9.

Thin Red Line I like more and more, every time I watch it.

It will grow on you. I loved it more the second time i saw it. Which was a few weeks later.

Its a struggle of Nature vs. Grace. Pitt being nature and Chastain being Grace. And you see that Penn's character was affected by his parents. The whole movie he was emotionally fighting over the events of his life. In the end, it seems he did.

    He did what?

I think that could have been portrayed just as well if not better through the younger Jack character, without dragging the older version into it.

Maybe cover the timeline when the younger sibling was killed with a slightly older version, instead of the much older Penn character.

I watched it for 30 minutes and fell asleep literally. My wife walked out of the room within 10 minutes of starting. Awful film. I'll give it a couple of points based on the cinematography alone which was neat. 2/10

I mean dont get me wrong. i Can enjoy movies like the avengers and shit, but we are talking a different level of film making here. I go to the movies for more than eye candy. I like to come out a movie theater with something to think about too.

That's cool. To each his own. For deep dramas I go for rentals. For mindless summer popcorn blockbusters I go to the movies. Like you said to Lb 4 Lb Malick films you either love it or hate it. I am in the second group and I have watched most of his films. Maybe I should not bother to check his films, but hey, I am a film buff: I watch anything, any genre, any language, from any age. My tastes and opinions differs from you guys, but that's okay too.

Wow that was almost identical to me and my girl friend seeing it.

And although I don't agree the cinematography was worth any points, I did find the little dinosaur scene almost worth the price of admission. Especially when he stepped on the other dinosaurs face.

Cool. I had no idea what the fuck was going on at the beginning of that movie. I was totally lost with all those space shots and everything.
