Starring Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson. Not a funny movie but a nice sweet harmless family fun. I liked it for what it was but if you're going in expecting big laughs you won't get them. 3/5
I really enjoyed this film although like others said it's mispromoted as a comedy when it's actually a drama with comedic tones. It covers the lives of 3 hardcore birders and what they go through to try and have a big (bird) year. The movie has lots of heart when dealing with all 3 guys issues (Martin's retirement, Black's relationship with his father and attempts at a romanance, and Wilson's birding affecting his marriage) as well as their relationship with one another, both in friendships and as adversaries. Great dialogue, pacing, and taking care of all the lose ends. 7.5/10
Much better then I had expected. I liked how it took it's subject more seriously then most movies, and made a pastime I would consider boring, into an interesting topic.
It had a budget of $41 million, but it took in just $7.4 million in ticket sales worldwide according to Box Office Mojo...what bomb!
It was a well made movie, but a flick about bird watching doesn't exactly scream box office. Probably why they tried to sell it as a comedy. Maybe they should have just played up the original intention of the movie. Couldn't have been any worse for them and it might have actually been taken more seriously by the type of people who watch The Discovery Channel and NatGeo every day.
Steve Martin - didnt even know he did movies anymore, especially since he stopped being remotely funny 15 years ago.
