Jon Jones Calls Chael Sonnen a Racist, Disappointed with White

UFC light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, received a lot of heat for his decision not to fight Chael Sonnen (as a replacement for Dan Henderson) on the promotion's Sept. 1 card, but the 25 year-old stands firmly by his choice.
Sonnen capitalized on Jones negative publicity, verbally attacking "Bones" during an interview with ESPN. He even called the youngest champion in UFC history an "entitled brat."
Jones doesn't seem overly concerned with Sonnen's insults, and he had a few harsh things to say about the "American Gangster" during an interview with Ariel Helwani. He also made it clear that he doesn't think Sonnen deserves a title shot.
"It's like, why would I contradict myself when I clearly just said that I think Chael Sonnen is a racist? The way he treats Brazilians is just totally uncalled for; I have zero respect for him," Jones said. "Chael Sonnen is a punk, he's a thug. He calls himself the American Gangster but he ratted out all his friends in that money laundering situation? That's not gangster. He's a straight punk."
As far as Jones' relationship with UFC president Dana White -- who threw the light-heavyweight champion under the bus after the Sept. 1 fight card was cancelled -- is concerned, it's pretty clear that it'll never be the same.
"When you go from me and you being really close… the last press conference after I fought Rashad [Evans] he was like 'don't you just love this guy' and now I'm like hated? Because I did what was right for me and my future?" Jones added. "I didn't really look at him as a boss or anything; I just looked at him as a friend, a business partner. I just thought I meant a lot to the UFC, and they made me feel like a piece of meat. Like a total piece of meat. … It's just good to see where I stand with him. There's no need to have any kind of fake relationship in the future. I'll continue to do my best for the UFC, but it's definitely good to see what I really mean to him."
Jones has every reason to be upset with the way he was treated by the UFC, and it'll be interesting to see where his relationship with White goes from here. They'll probably end up making up for the sake of business, but there are some things people never forget.
White's decision to publicly shame Jones for declining a Sept. 1 fight against Sonnen is one of the worst decisions the UFC's president has made in quite some time, and I'm sure it'll end up haunting him sometime in the future.
Without a doubt, Jones had every right to refuse a fight with Sonnen, and I actually respect him more for standing up to the UFC, while other fighters like Charlie Brenneman try to throw their own under the bus, just to earn a few points with the boss.

I don't think Sonnen is racist at all. Sure he made some racist jokes @ the expense of Brazilians but I don't think he's a racist and I hate when black people always turn to a race card the first chance they get. Continuing on I usually like Dana and don't like Jones but gotta say Jones is mostly right here. Dana White acts like a hot girl who expects every guy to bend over backwards for her and if they don't she throws a fit . UFC is too used of "team players" like Leben for example who take fights whenever , with whoever and on however of a short notice (and end up addicted to pain killers , fuck up their bodies and in the end their careers which are their livelihoods.) UFC likes to think of themselves as one big family but reality is it is not a team sport. Fighting is a serious business. Anyone of their fighters' careers could end at any given day and do you really think UFC will take care of them for the rest of their lives ? It's a "team sport" as long as it suits UFC and as long as it makes them a lot of money but at the end of the day it's all about rich people wanting to be even richer and expecting everyone to play along. Good for Jones.

I'm actually surprised that Jones has the balls to call the shots like that. I mean if UFC were to just fire him sure they'd take a hit but they'd go on and keep making mad amounts of money but where would that leave Jones? Where he would go? What would he do ? I also do not like how Dan Henderson is barely getting any slack for UFC 151 being canceled when in fact it was mostly his fault. He hid an injury for two weeks and told them in the last minute. Odds are if he says he got injured 2 weeks prior Jones accepts the Sonnen fight and we have UFC 151 already behind us.

 

That's a good point actually, as it's now known he'd known he was injured for a while.

I think it's quite possible that Hendo and Sonnen had a plan and it backfired on them. They were both at the gym together, they're good friends I'm sure Dan told him everything. It probably went like this.

"You know what you should do Chael ? Start talking some smack to Jones, get people talking you know and then I'll pull out really late so it will be hard for them to find replacement and there you are bro there you are fighting for the title"

Jones' excuse about not having time to prepare for Sonnen was bullshit, but everything else about not fighting Sonnen on short notice makes sense and I am very glad that he was smart enough and brave enough to tell the UFC to fuck off. Dana is smart and a good businessman, but he is loyal to himself and the UFC far more than he is to the fighters. He is basically Don King with a better mask.

Jones is probably the only fighter who can leave the UFC and make more money outside of it, but he can. The UFC will realize this and Dana will apologize. Because he's sorry, no, but because he realizes that he fucked with the one horse in the stable who doesn't need him.

 

I don't think Sonnen is racist by the Brazilian comments. But I fully agree with everything else Jones is doing.

I respect Jones more for all of this. If anyone is being a little bitch and a crybaby in this situation it's Dana White. Jones has no obligation to fight Sonnen. Not only that but Dan Henderson knew he was injured 3 fucking weeks before he told Dana White he couldn't fight. Now who's fault is that? I'm pretty sure given 3 weeks Jones would have fought anyone they told him to. Basically what I'm saying here is fuck Sonnen, and fuck Dana.

Personally I'm just pissed because I wanted to see Jones fight, and I would have loved to see him give Sonnen a beatdown. Unfortunately for Jones, he's handled the whole thing like a complete bitch.

That being said, think about Dana White for a second. I guess you could respect him for always speaking his mind even if it comes off as abrassive. But that's absolute bull shit. White is the president of the biggest MMA organization on the planet. No matter what he thinks or wants to say, he is in a position where he should think about the image of his organization. When he goes off like a jilted school girl, he looks like he should working the fry machine at Burger King.

The idea of publically slamming one of the UFC's most popular fighters is just trashy. It isn't remotely professional. I am forced to compare it to the Head Coach of an NFL team. You would never hear a head coach pull that shit. One of his football player's could get arrested for raping a puppy and the head coach is going to remain professional in his public comments despite what he might WANT to say.

I may be in the miniority but I think Dana has out-lived his stay at the top of the UFC. If the organization or the sport wants to continue to grow in the mainstream, the UFC needs someone with a ton more tact and maturity running the company. Again, I guess there are those that respect Dana for speaking his mind. Unfortunately that just isn't an approach that fosters mainstream acceptance. It just continues to feed the stereotype that UFC fans are toothless rednecks.

I also think it's crazy that White comes down harder on Jones for choosing not to fight than he came down on Overeem, Marquardt, Sonnen, etc for failing freaking drug test. Seriously, where were the tweets about Overeem being a juiced up cheater? Or Sonnen for his many slip ups? Hell, if you're going to be a moron and unprofessional, at least do it consistently.

As much as Jones pissed me off by not fighting Sonnen, it irks me far greater that a cheat like Chael Sonnen gets to stand on any higher ground, even for a second, than a guy like Jon Jones.
