Dawson. Who did Cotto beat recently as good as Hopkins?

Outpointing an almost 50 year old Hopkins is a great accomplishment?

Cotto. Showed great balls and no small amount of adjustment to get past the admittedly damaged Margarito. Sort of performance is beyond Chad. So long as we discuss who is the "Better" fighter, we must remember the game is 10% physical and 90% psychological, and Cotto is way out in front. Say what we will about Cotto and his obvious shortcomings, he's yet to fold in the circumstances Chad has. Chad wouldn't just have quit he would have self-immolated rather than allow himself to take the beatings Cotto took from Pac and Margarito I.

This is the sort of magical thinking that has come to dominate boxing circles in the USA.

Hopkins is "Old Man Hopkins" when we discuss Joe Calzaghe {2008} but it's "Who did Cotto beat recently as good as Hopkins" when we come to talking about Dawson. {beat Hopkins this year}.

So Hopkins in 2008 it seems is an easier assignment than the rejuvenated 2012 version. Please.

It's like a Communist Kangaroo Court. One minute, a guy is a counter-revolutionary, the next minute he's a hero of the revolution, depending on the luckless mug his testimony is being deployed against.

It's not magical, it's just the truth. Nevermid Dawson's win over Adamek, also better than anyone Cotto ever beat.

I didn't say Hopkins wasn't good, I said I seriously doubt Ward would get dropped on his ass by old man Hopkins like Calzaghe did. I just think Ward is better than Calzaghe.

Still, nobody has named anything Cotto beat recently as good as old man Snaggles.

Cotto would school Doorson. Unless you're 50 years old or weight drained, he just stands there looking at you like a plank of wood.

Cotto on the basis of being more of a "FIGHTER"

Dawson is a pedestrian boxer who happened to come along at a time when Light Heavy was an absolute fucking WASTELAND... Rather than saying to yourselves "wow, that Bernard Hopkins is an ageless magician... He's unbelievable... how has he beaten guys so much younger than him like Jean Pascal??" you should be saying "he's beaten them because, despite being 800 years old, he had enough craft and know-how to negate their bullshit which is based on nothing other than affleticizm" ... Why did Dawson beat Bernard Hopkins? because Bernard Hopkins is about 50 years old and has the stamina to throw roughly two punches per round. It is not because Chad Dawson is good. A good light heavyweight, say someone like Marvin Johnson, would have chased him out of the ring, beaten the hell out of him, treated him LIKE A 50 YEAR OLD... What 50 year old, crafty welterweight did Miguel Cotto have the benefit of fighting? Is there any doubt that Cotto would easily dispose of such an opponent? Adamek WAS done at the weight and beating him is only impressive if Adamek is anywhere near as good as some think he is (he's not and he never was.)

Miguel Cotto went in to the ring against the best boxer (easily) of the last 10 years, a fighter with skills and know-how that essentially none of the world-class fighters under the age of 30 today seem to have, and he gave a good account of himself. He lost very clearly and without dispute, but he was game, he tried hard, he took his chances and did the best he could, he even took 3 or 4 rounds himself. He never looked out of place. It was a "good loss" because while it highlighted some of his weaknesses, it also revealed his character and courage and the skills he does have.

Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, boxing is not just a tale of the tape or a W-L record. The game, more than any other, reveals a fighter's character. You will know more about a fighter when he is up against it then you ever will learn when things are going his way. When he was up against it, Cotto fought on, kept trying, kept hoping he could make something happen. When he was up against it in the first Margarito fight, he fought back until his body failed him, most likely affected by circumstances beyond his control (the gloves) ... Chad Dawson saw that he was up against it and he froze up and eventually, his body still largely able, he acquiesced. Who's the better fighter? the only "fighter" of the pair... Cotto

Dawson beat Adamek 5 years ago. 4 months after he lost the fight, Adamek was fighting 25 pounds heavier and never fought at lower than cruiserweight since then. I don't see how this fight is relevant when comparing Cotto and Dawson TODAY. Cotto was fighting and beating top fighters in his division five years ago.

Personnally, I don't care who's better but I know I'd much rather watch Cotto than Dawson, that's all that matters IMO.

Excellent point, it would be akin to bringing up what Roy did a few years ago after his 2 KO losses

And regarding Adamek, Z is just being a chode for the sake of it I think in my mind. Adamek was obviously weight drained, as you said he jumped straight to cruiser after the fight, and looked weight drained too.

Yes, he was, he looked like a totally different fucking person. Most people put in 25lbs and look like fat bastards. He put on 25lbs and looked, well, normal.

Great post. And I agree Cotto has shown a lot more depth. The balls he's displayed and actually beating all time greats in their prime like Mosley. He showed his toughness and that heart, skill and courage will triumph over front runners with more talent (Judah, Clottey).

Sure, nobody ever moves up after getting whooped. He knew he wasn't winning the title there so off he went to cruiser.
