Just One Of The Guys I rewatched this 1985 classic since I had recently watched with my children the Amanda Bynes similar film She's The Man. While watching that 2006 film I kept telling myself and my children what a lousy version of Just one of the Guys it was. So to refresh my memory I watched it again. I was right. The 1985 cult classic still has it. Sure it looks dated as hell with all the 80's music, hair and funny fashions, but the story itself remains timeless as its original inspiration, William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Terri Griffith (Joyce Hyser) is a teenage girl with aspirations of becoming a serious newspaper writer. When she realizes that she is overlooked by her teacher and peers just because she is a good looking girl, she decides to go their rival high school enrolling as a boy to achieve her goal and prove them wrong. She gets help from her best friend Denise and her sex obsessed horny kid brother, Buddy. Unlike the Amanda Bynes film most of the jokes here are a little bit raunchy or in the sexual department, but they work. While as a boy, looking freakingly a lot like Ralph Macchio, she befriends this nerdy guy, Rick, which she helps him to take the girl of his dreams to the prom. In the proccess she falls in love with him and the ultimate revelation is both funny, ackward, embarrasing and sexy. The film is entertaining. It even has the bully from Karate Kid to harass Daniel San-look-alike Terri! The main actress, Joyce Hyser, while not a real beauty is ridiculously sexy and is great both as Terri and as a boy. Critics were merciless with this film and were making stupid comparisons with Tootsie and Victor/Victoria two films that were box office hits and critics darlings. Too bad this film flopped when it was first released since I really wanted to watch more leading roles from this actress (she ultimately ended doing secondary roles or guest stars on many tv series). She's The Man folowed a similar plot but with the girl wanting to be part of the male soccer team. Amanda Bynes just doesn't look like a boy with that Spock wig. The film is mildly entertaining and girls appreciate Channing Tatum's abs, but it is a much inferior and ultimately forgettable version. Just One of The Guys 7/10 She's The Man 4.5/10
Joyce Hyser as Terri and as a guy looking like a certain Karate Kid Checking out other girls with her/his new friend
Decent flick when nothing else is on TV, its one of those campy movies that you watch when you're bored and it just comes on cable.
