SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER (1977) – Re-watched this again when I recently purchased the blu-ray 30[SUP]th[/SUP] Anniversary edition. I was hoping it included the PG version since my daughters loved Travolta in Grease and they want to watch this one too. It doesn’t include the PG version so they’ll have to wait until they are older enough. But, what can be said about this film that hasn’t been said before? It is the epitome of the 70’s decade. Its movie poster is iconic of that era. When I first watched it at age 18 in 1977 I liked it a lot mainly because of the songs which were very popular on the radio and at that time it was rare for a film to have so many popular current songs on the radio while it was still being shown at theaters. The dance sequences were cool for the disco era, and the film did touched a cultural nerve in youth audiences of the time. It was cool to go watch Star Wars AND Saturday Night Fever. At the Academy awards the film got a few nominations for its screenplay & Travolta got his first nomination as Best Actor. After watching the film this time I realize how realistic this film is: it pulls no punches in its portrayal of its characters, virtues and flaws alike. In fact if they remake this film today it will suck big time in that department alone since many view it now as ‘politically incorrect, racially biased, sexual misconduct and homophobic’. But hey, these characters were like that, because many people are like that! Today we will get a Tony Manero who is a misunderstood teen with a heart of gold, Stephanie will be a good girl on a mission to rescue Tony and will fall deeply in love with him, Annette will be the bitch of the film, an evil girl trying with all her one-dimensional heart to separate Tony from Stephanie and all of Tony’s friend’s will be good natured geeks. Meanwhile his brother will be an evangelical pastor who resigned after a sexual scandal only hinted at in this sanitized version. Bobby will not kill himself and much less Tony will be partly at fault for that. If this was a popcorn film in the 70’s, it feels like crude drama today. This was Travolta’s best acting role ever and he has never been able to fill again those boogie shoes. 9/10

That whole scene where everybody starts slapping the one next to them was hilarious and the 'watch the hair' line was very funny upon first viewing and reflected the vanity of the character Tony Manero. I detested this movie as a teenager when it originally came out. But now, watching it as an adult, it's great for absolutely all the wrong reasons.
No, because they were robbed. Only Tony was honest enough to admit the biased decision and he gave them the trophy and the $500.00. So everything is fine. :: What I didn't like was the 'spinc' name calling, but then retard young italian-american guidos talk like that all the time.
