Some top fighters earn their way the old fashioned way. But most of them, especially in this day and age, do so by gaming the system. As top fighters with lots of bargaining power, the best fighters have many ways to minimize their chances of losing, whether its their choice of weight class or the opponents they face.

Who are some of the best gamers?

Lots of us are so anxious to defend our favorites, our first reaction to a topic like this is to shut down the debate - keep the illusion alive. Not me.

    Top gamers:

Castillo was indeed a gamer, enjoying a vast size advantage in his most important fights. By the way, Castillo will be on FNF next month.

Margarito was indeed a gamer. De La Hoya? Not as much. Not compared to many others.

What???...He MANIPULATED Practically EVERY Fight he Could...

FORCING Bernard Hopkins, THE Middleweight Champion of the World, to Weigh in @ 157 MAX, in Defense of His OWN Title???...FORCING Vargas to Wear HEAVIER Gloves than was the Norm, @ the Time of the Fight???...Waiting Until Quartey was Somewhat EXPOSED by Lopez AND INACTIVE for a Calendar Year, Before Pursuing that Fight???...Waiting Until Vargas was CLEARLY Diminished, Before Pursuing That Fight...

Shrinking his WELTERWEIGHT Frame to 130 & 135, to Pick Up 2 CHEAP Titles...

Only a Dela Dick Rider would EXCLUDE him from a "Gamer" List, Bro...He was as OPPORTUNISTIC as ANY Fighter in History....

Okay. I concede. ODH was indeed a gamer. I'm inclined to overlook his a bit since he lost plenty of the fights in which he ostensibly enjoyed an unfair advantage. But I concede. Still, I give him credit for taking so many fights he was expected to lose, and for winning a good handful of them.

Poor word choice here. Gamer means clutch performer, lots of effort...

I do think the impact of having the two best heavyweights in the world resolved never to fight one another is bigger than most people think. I'm not even sure we can fully appreciate all its implications if we tried.

James Toney is a juicer though
and manipulates the rules by bending away from an opponent to mainly just leave his back and back of head exposed - which they aren't allowed to hit

so what fighter isn't/wasn't a gamer??

    Nah...

Even Shots to the ARMS & GLOVES Can HURT...Not Enough to get you KO'ed, but the Shit is PAINFUL, Put it That Way...There's SAFER, MORE "Pussy" Ways of Fighting than the "Earmuff" Approach....

good call, Felix Sturm too, Bute also ( even though he took a risk for the Froch fight )

all fighters who are happy to build up defenses vs overmatched nobodies in the safety of their hometowns except for the rare ( usually very ) calculated risk
