Im reading the Lyle biography. And this fight was scheduled for februari 78'. But it didnt take place, because Lyle was incarcerated on newyearseve 77' on first-degree murder charges. Lyle was coming off a good win against Bugner. With the lyle fight cancelled, Holmes fought Shavers instead, and we all now what happened there. So, how would it have gone down if they fought as planned? Is there even a remote chance the tough Lyle changes boxing history and defeats Holmes?
I wouldn't be surprised if Lyle gave Holmes a tough fight, but Larry is on another level. Too much skill, and the toughness necessary to survive the rough patches.
Agree with Whiskey Lyle was a good enough boxer skill-wise to hang with good boxers like Holmes and he was a very respectable banger when he had to be, but he was not enough of either to ever be a champ or consistently succeed at one or the other. I figure he gives Larry a tough time, maybe he hurts him once but ultimately is either stopped very late or loses a clear cut decision
Big Ron would have given it his all, but Holmes win big on points. Lyle was whipped twice by Jimmy Young who wasn't near the boxer or fighter Larry was, and Ron always had trouble with guys that boxed him like Quarry did. Lyle was too slow for Larry.
