A thread dedicated to fighters who deserve to be in the Hall, and aren't. Considering they put that palooka Gatti in the HOF, there's MANY here we can list who deserve to be in. Just a FEW that come to mind: Curry: I think this is THE biggest crime of them all. Donald Curry most DEFINITELY should have been in the HOF, and it should have happened YEARS ago! He unified the titles at welter, and did so by beating GOOD competition in DOMINATE fashion. Head-to-head, there aren't too many welters in history who would have beaten the 84-85 Curry. Robinson would have, Leonard would have, Hearns would have, and the Duran of Montreal would have. Besides them however, I'd favor the mid 80's Curry over any welter that ever lived. You got guys like Carlos Palomino, and fuckin Brian Mitchell in the HOF. I'm sorry, but neither of those guys were in the same class as Curry, and didn't accomplish as much. Jackson: P4P probably the biggest puncher that ever lived. Fuckin Cuevas is the HOF, and Jackson beat much better fighters than Cuevas, and was a much better fighter in general. Speaking of fighters Jackson beat, Julian's son, Norris is in the HOF, but not Julian. Naz: I'm pretty SURPRISED that Naz isn't in the Hall yet, considering it's basically a popularity contest. Accomplishments aside, Naz brought recognition to the lighter weight classes and paved the way for feathers and below to start making the big bucks. He was also dominate in his prime, despite the fact he didn't dominate the best comp. Probably the biggest punching featherweight of all time, I think Naz definitely deserves in, despite the fact that I HATED him and rooted against him everytime he fought. These are just the first 3 that popped in my head, there's MANY others who deserve in. Name em.
Esteban DeJesus- Only man to beat Duran at lightweight and was a solid, well respected champion, and considered one of the most talented fighters to come out of Puerto Rico.
better question is how many don't deserve to be there at all in the first place guys like Curry and DeJesus shit on half of the guys in there
Good point. It's certainly not the sacred institution the MLB Hall is. It seems like if a guy made a few Friday Night Fights appearances, he is officially on the ballot. Dejesus is a no-brainer, that has to be the most egregious omission of them all. With that said, I'd still love to attend one of the induction weekends.
I see "Moochie" up there every year, but they ain't let Starling in the gates yet. The head guy at IBRO has boycotted the HOF because they haven't let Tony DeMarco in. A lot of the old-timers are upset because the 1st Davey Moore (the one killed by Sugar Ramos), isn't in there.
Rodrigo Valdez I think this excellent middleweight champion of the 70's certainly deserves to be in the IBHOF. He really beat Carlos Monzon and was a very powerful and fearsome puncher with polished skill. I have him as the second greatest fighter ever from Colombia behind only Antonio Cervantes. He beat Bennie Briscoe three times, the toughest fighter to never win a world title. The guy had a slashing punching style when throwing combinations, similar to Mayweather and had verve, rhythm and balance, real ring-wise.
I have no problem with Valdez being a hall of famer (I would enthusiastically endorse him for the honor), but he never beat Monzon
Marlon Starling is another who would whup the ass of many guys already in there... I could see Davey Moore I on there too, for sure
dejesus not being in the HOF is bizarre. is there a particular reason or rationale for his not having been inducted?
that ran through my mind, but i couldn't take it seriously. maybe in the 70s-80s, even early 90s. but now? wouldn't they go back & rectify it?
possible... but I don't know, it didn't open until 1990 and the first year or two was pretty much all no-brainers... You would figure by the mid 90s, when all of the deserving old-timers had pretty much already been inducted, nobody would have batted an eye at someone dying of AIDS
Lupe Pintor deserves to be in there as well. He was a great fighter and champion, the war with Wilfredo Gomez was one of the most brutal of the 80's decade. Alfonso Zamora, one of the hardest hitters ever should be inducted as well.
folks I knew Stephen, and believe me when i tell you this, he was known for blowing a lot of hot air when it came to stuff like "AIDS". Dont buy into all that phooey, folks, he died of natural causes.
:: Great post for two reasons: 1. The Omar thing 2. Hegman ALWAYS refers to DeJesus as "Stephen" which is infuriating because you basically never hear anyone else refer to him that way, which makes it seem like there is a personal familiarity between Smegman and the late DeJesus... DeJesus is of course "another distinguished former champion" much like the Myrrh Gloves runner-up Smegman
