550k ppv buys. Not bad for a squash match. Jones is really starting to be come a good draw. Still not close to Diaz vs. GSP, but not bad at all.
Jones is a mid level star. Anderson and GSP are high level. Though this shows Chael Sonnen isnt at all the draw that his fans and the UFC made him out to be, and that Anderson Silva's PPV rates had been trending upward for years before he finally broke through with the second Sonnen fight. Sonnen definitely was a big factor, but let's not act like Silva didn't do 600k when no one knew Sonnen or that he didn't do 725k with Vitor Belfort right before that. Anderson hasn't done under 500k on a domestic card since the UFC events were in double digits.....and people tried to discredit the "poor" PPV numbers in Brazil not acknowledging that those 335 and 410k are among the highest non-US/Canada buyrates the UFC has done. There's a big disadvantage to promoting a fight that's not in the US.
Personally I think the UFC is probably slightly disappointed with 550. Jones and Evans did 700. I am sure thy we're banking on Sonnen doing more selling on TUF. The show did absolutely nothing to increase interest in the fight. Personally I'm glad Sonnen was mature on the show and made it all about the fighters, but I know Dana was hoping for some of Chael's antics to sell the fight. And to be honest, Sonnen was so respectful on the show, it probably had the opposite impact on borderline fans.
It's still UFC's second biggest PPV this year. And i dont know about over there, but here, i didnt see the extra advertisement for this fight like others. Sonnen just came off a loss to silva and i think his steam is gone. I think the UFC is very lucky they got this number.
I think it did better than it should have but I know the UFC was expecting Sonnen's mouth to really sell it. The fact that this card, with Jones, only did slightly better than Rousey-Carmouche is interesting. Does that mean Rousey-Zingano has the potential to do 700-800 buys? The UFC has to love Rousey. She might be the 3rd biggest "stand alone" draw in the organization. I said "might be"...
Rousey is getting some major attention. The next fight will really tell if this her PPV potential is real or just a one time deal. But so many women are gravitating towards her. I attend 3 different gyms and since the rousey fight, membership from women have increased a minimum of 10%. In all three gyms.
You can only repackage sonnen so many times before fans catch on. This was a mismatch, everyone knew it and it still did fairly good numbers. I am sure it's well over their break even number.
Agree. Sonnen's novelty shelf life is simply at its end. He'll have to do it solely on merit from now on. At 185, maybe. I don't see him being able to do it at 205.
Rousey is the novelty act right now. Maybe Tate added something, but no longer. The only matchup that is compelling for Rousey is Cyborg. Otherwise it will be Rousey and Rousey alone selling her ppv's. I suppose the UFC is good enough at promotion that they can make any number of opponents look worthy through highlight clips, etc, but there is almost zero name recognition for Rousey opponents.
Cat Zigano just whooped Tate so she's next, there is also Sara McMann the Olympic wrestler. She's got some options.
Last few events have been pretty good. UFC 156 Good card UFC 157 Good card UFC on Fuel Silva vs. Stann Good card UFC 158 terrific card UFC 159 decent card UFC on Fox Henderson vs. Melendez Awesome card UFC on Fox Johnson vs. Dodson Good card UFC 160 looks to be a very good card on paper.
The Silva Stann card was great. Just the two top fights were as good as it gets. I would have paid PPV money to watch Hunt-Struve. I think the cards are watered down to some degree due to the UFC doing so many shows, but the quality so far in 2013 has been strong. And when you factor in the absolutely great fights that have been non-PPV, it has been a good year.
Honestly I've been enjoying the free shows more than I have the PPV's lately. Having a fight like Belcher vs Bisping as a PPV co-main event is just embarrassing. TFK
Just a bad card from top to bottom in my opinion. Healy-Miller was the only saving grace. This card looked horrible on paper and with all the odd happenings (eye pokes, thumb break) and mismatches, it was actually worse than expected.
indeed, as a whole, we get more good fights than before. But there's no doubt imo that the quality of the PPV have been watered down. It seems that there's a correlation between that and the declining PPV buy's, so maybe the Fox deal wasn't as good as expected for the UFC.
But the fox cards have been great. And watered down sure, but still pretty damn good as evident by the list i posted. If you get more great free shows that is a good thing.
The UFC business model is quantity over quality. Not that quality doesn't matter, but I'm guessing over the same time period the UFC prefers 100 events that bring in one million each over 50 events that bring in 1.75 million each.
The UFC has a huge roster. You cant have quality cards all the time. But the shows they have been putting have the best quality out there in any combat sports.
Not really, Dana doesn't like the PPV model that much and thinks it has a limited shelf-life. The FOX shows make ad/gate money and allows them to do a lot more shows than they have in the past so I doubt they are hurting because a few less hundred thousand pay per view buys.
Yeah Dana has been on record saying that he eventually wants to move away from the PPV model. But i dont see that happening anytime soon. plus he still has his big draw GSP who just did about a million PPV buys
maybe it didnt sell as well as expected because people realized sonnen is a cheating faggot who didnt stand a chance of winning. I dont watch much cage fighting but i like to see jones and have seen several of his ppvs but i didnt make a point to watch that one. or maybe the boxing fights on that night impacted sales negatively
As far as I know the leagues and organizations for whatever it may be get a percentage. Either that or it could be a fixed amount.
