Prime Quartey was too big & too good for any current welters, probably including the current version of Floyd.
:: I would give Floyd a shot because he's very good at timing and countering a jab with a right hand, though Quartey is much bigger & better than anyone else he's faced.
For sure. That would be a highly intriguing fight. Floyd could win, but he'd really have to dig deep to do it.
I'd have loved to see mayweather jr vs a sharp active version of quartey at welter. Then again that is two different sized guys. 10 pound disadvantage for the current guy. Quartey waited around welter for the payday vs delahoya.
I think a bigger/stronger guy like quartey (or wright even more so) who has a sharp jab would really stymie the offense of mayweather jr at 47 and up
Quartey would punish this guy, the jab should be way too much for mathysse to handle. I'd expect Quartey to get rocked once in a while, but to severly whoop Mathysse along the way, and to get the ko in the middle rounds
That's nuts, I'd be confident of picking Floyd. Quartey isn't as big as Oscar, so Floyd has already defeated a bigger fighter. Plus while I rate Quartey, he was never a super elite fighter like Floyd. I also don't think he matches up well stylewise. He's only Floyd's height, and is too patient and fairly slow. He'd trouble Floyd a bit with his jab, but ultimately get picked apart and potshotted.
But yeah, I'd obviously pick Quartey over Mattysse. For starters Lucas looks like a 140 pounder at best.
I quite liked Quartey, but I feel like he's become really, really overrated. People act like he was this unstoppable beast. Who has he beaten? Vince Phillips and Oba Carr. He lost to Oscar (in a very close fight) then got beaten soundly, and outboxed by Vargas.
he was largely inactive by the time he was in with Vargas and it was at 154, not 147 He's a much better welterweight than any Floyd has fought
Vargas won that fight no question, but it was a great matchup. IMO it's a highly underrated contest. Also like cdgogg already mentioned it was @ 154, and at least a year after the De La Hoya fight with nothing in between.
Ike vs Floyd would be an interesting fight at 147. A case could be made for Ike because it's possible Floyd simply doesn't have enough firepower to keep him off. But a case could also be made for Floyd, because it's possible Ike would be too robotic for him. At the end of the day I think it'd be a close fight. Floyd is such a brilliant thinker in the ring, that it's possible he'd find a way to pull it out. Especially because Ike faded late, and Floyd doesn't. I hope nobody's thinking Ike would dominate Floyd or something. Even Oba Carr took about 2-3 rounds off of Ike.
Agreed. Also, re: Quartey/DLH, DLH lost that fight imo. iirc he spent at least 8 rounds doing nothing but standing around eating jabs & 1-2s.
Quartey is basically a solid, skilled plodder with a great jab. But all the same he IS a plodder. Watch the Vargas fight, and even parts of the Oscar fight to see this. No way he beats Floyd, not a chance, he just doesn't have the style.
While it's true that quartey was a bit of a plodder, I think that jab would make Floyd very reluctant, even ore than he was in the Oscar fight. It would be very close imo
Yeah like I said, that rangey, hard, accurate jab would have success against Floyd, but ultimately not enough to have a realistic chance of winning IMO. Floyd will always beat a plodder. His movement/defense/potshotting ability and counters are just perfect against plodders.
I don't know , Castillo is a bit of a plodder and he gave Floyd hell in 2 fights, and should probably have won the first onet
Castillo kind of LOOKS like a plodder, in that he has slow, deliberate footwork and movement - but he isn't. He lets his hands go too much to be a plodder, and doesn't really need to be set to punch. Chico was an amazing offensive fighter in his own right, but a pure plodder, and that's why Floyd dominated him as much as he did.
Quartey had something neither of those guys had... an all-universe jab, as well as size... He doesn't need to chase Floyd down if he's working that jab, that jab closes the distance for him, he doesn't have to get close before he can engage the way Castillo needed to, the way Chico the retarded tall guy who fought short had to
