For one of the better strikers in the HW division, JDS sure is sloppy as fuck. The overhand right he throws looks completely retarded. Did Chuck Liddell teach him that? It's fucking ugly and not technical at all, he's a big dude with power but his striking is not even close to elite. He's got a good jab, but his power shots are telegraphed and shitty and the jab to the body he kept throwing, I was just waiting for Hunt to time that with a left hook to his chin that was just hanging out there. Not impressed with JDS lately.
It's a funny situation with JDS. There are aspects that make his striking look top notch. For example, his jab is always dead-on and he has subtly nifty footwork. But then he walks around with his chin in the air and throwing that looping overhand right that Z mentioned. Luckily for JDS, his power, speed and chin make him a good overall MMA striker.
Now Cain on the other hand, his striking seems to be getting a lot better. In the JDS fight and in the Bigfoot rematch. He throws a picture perfect jab straight right. The one that dropped Bigfoot was a beauty.
BTW is it just me or did JDS's boxing used to look a lot better than it did in this fight? He looked sloppy, he was throwing that right hand like a fucking handbag, he looked like Freddie Flintoff ::
That wash woman haymaker he throws is a good punch. His timing is good enough and he has the fastest handspeed in division so he lands on almost everyone. Picture perfect technique isn't as important as timing and speed. He lacks true punching power, his power comes from the fact that he generates so much velocity on full force punches. He can't knock guys out with little wind up....all of his KO's were huge bombs and looked like huge bombs, even from when he KO'd Werdum....it was a huge step in uppercut.
I'm not saying it's not effective, it obviously is. It's just the hype he gets for being such a good striker, he sure is sloppy out there. Reminds me of Fedor's striking. Just throwing haymakers.
Well to be fair, effective = good. Not everyone can be Anderson Silva and do everything near perfectly. The thing with JDS is he has a huge head and it helps him takes shots to make up for his so-so defense. It's just like in boxing, punchers like Matthysse can be sloppy and less refined because they are effective. Junior Dos Santos is so much faster than everyone it's not even funny and he uses it to his advantage.
