Pulev vs Thompson on Saturday

Any interest in this fight? It is in the undercard of Brahmer and Abraham facing crappy scrubs.

Even though heavyweight gets plenty of rightful criticism, three fights between top-10 contenders inside two months is not bad (this, Fury-Haye and Povetkin-Wlad).

This won't probably be an entertaining fight, Thompson himself described his style as "ugly but effective" but I think it is nice to see how Pulev handles him and whether or not Pulev could be the guy to really challenge K2, Povetkin has no shot

 

Tactical affair this will be. My money would be on Pulev, but with no real certainty. Momentum is with Tony and Pulev hasn't fought since September 2012 I think.

 

I have never seen this Pulev fight before. From what I read though, he can't punch, and is pretty boring to watch. I want Thompson to win, because it would be funny seeing him challenge Wlad THRICE and get KO'ed THRICE. One day when Thompson is old, sitting on his porch, smoking a pipe, he will tell his grandkids about how he fought the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and got KNOCKED OUT, and how he fought him AGAIN and how he again got KNOCKED OUT, and then how he fought him AGAIN, and AGAIN got KNOCKED OUT. The grandkids will most likely at that point start looking for a new hero.

 

His style is amateurish, he keeps his hands high, moves in and out and throws one-twos from start to finish. His workrate is good and he is relatively quick for guy of his size (6'4 or so), otherwise he is very average in every regard. His punches have some snap in them, but not real power. His resume is pretty good for a guy with such little experience

 

From what I've seen of Pulev he keeps his hands low and has average reflexes and handspeed. Decent jab though.

Both Adamek and Jennings were offered to fight Pulev here but both refused. Thompson's got guts

 

The fight is about to start. National anthems on

 

Thompson takes the first round. They mostly stand in the center of the ring, Thompson sneaks in about three nice lefts, Pulev tries one flurry

 

2 round. Thompson is pretty much schooling Pulev, landing his jab easily. Pulev still doing nothing

 

3 round close, neither did much apart from pawing jabs. Tempted to give that round too to Tony

 

4 round for Pulev, but it is close. The fight is actually heating up, they were trading. Thompson landed some clean shots early but Pulev came back with angry rights

 

5 round, Pulev takes over and dominates the round. He found his rhythm and timing, landing his right several times and also getting his jab moving, whereas Thompson didn't land anything. Thompson still grinning to his punches though

 

6 round Pulev, even though Thompson landed one good combination. He is now dictating the rhythm

 

7th round was messy with plenty of rabbit punching but Pulev took it. Neither seems to be hurting each other, which means Pulev won't beat Wlad either

 

8th round also Pulev. Thompson doesn't jab anymore, now he just leans in, Pulev wrestled him down twice in the round

 

9 round, Thompson is spent. Pulev landed some big rights late in the round which he dominated

 

Some guy in Pulev's corner sounded exactly like Adolph Hitler.

 

Hitler got medals. Hitler got girlfriends.

 

10 round. Now it is all about can Thompson finish the fight
