I know we like to talk about mythical matchups but the guys from today just look so much bigger in their weight class from guys from the past....im guessing modern science is better than ever....all the guys on the showtime card tonight looked huge!!! Am I wrong?

Thurman didn't. He's a 5'7 welterweight who is not even that beefy. Broner and Maidana also looked small for the weight, even though Maidana somehow beefed up to 160

    Maidana Vs Haggles MM.

Who in particular? As I said in the main event both guys looked small at 147. The recent Alexander Vs Porter, both guys also looked small at 147.

Big welters are guys like Oscar and Tito, they would have dwarfed most of the welters around today, so no, the guys fighting today are not bigger than the previous generation.

I also think that they looked pretty big, especially Thurman and Soto Karass. Might just be an illusion tough.

Soto Karass looks like an average size welter to me.

Mike Jones was a BIG Welter Too, but Having Said that, Jones was SMALLER than Tommy Hearns Was...Nonetheless, Mike Jones was Quite a Bit BIGGER than Soto-Karass, who was CLEARLY BIGGER Than Keith Thurman...

REED's Never Seen Keith Thurman in Person, but he's Stood Next to Soto-Karass 2wice...Dude's 5'9-5'10 MAX, If That...

When you go back far enough, it becomes obvious. Guys like McLarnin and Ross would be fighting as lightweights today. Its a combination of factors. Same day weigh in is gone. Back in the day, people used to think steak made the difference. Now its a whole fuck load of stuff, some of it illegal even now. The human body has not evolved one iota in 60 years, what has evolved is our ability to drag more and more out of the same system. Even creatine, now very dated, can make the same person look twice the size if used correctly.

Maidana looked fairly soft at 160, i thought. Difficult to tell if putting on that kind of weight is an advantage or not

Exactly, makes you wonder why? He hardly looks like a natural 160 pounder.

Yep he's listed as 5'9.5, with a very average physique.

Just imagine Hearns Vs these guys at 147 today  He'd dwarf them, and batter them.

This is a really weird thread, as I basically feel the opposite. This gen of welters just seem smaller than ever. They are pretty much ALL guys having come up in weight.

Pacquiao, Floyd, Bradley, Provo, Maidana, "Bronner", Paulie, Marquez - every single one of these guys have come up in weight, and look small at 147. Most of them would be dwarfed by the Oscar generation of welters, and even Leonard, who was a pretty big, solid, 5'10 welter.

5'9.5 is probably about Ray Leonard's height

i know also that...for sure these guys seem able to put on weight and take off weight easier than ever before...people jumping all through the weight classes back and forth.....i want same day weigh ins...i just think its best that way...when i watch a weight class I want to see welterweights fighting...not middleweights..and vice versa
