I like this matchup, due to Chino being overrated since the Broner fight. I give give him 4 rounds tops before Cuevas sends him back to Argentina in a box.
Is this the NEW & IMPROVED Maidana Being Discussed, or the Regular NON-CGI'ed Version???... REED:dunno:
The New and Improved Maidana (NAIM) gets on his toes and boxes Cuevas, putting on a clinic in the early rounds. Sometime around the 6th or 7th, Cuevas is looking battered and by the 8th, NAIM puts him away with a masterful counter. He then calls out Leonard, who ducks him for as long as he can. When the fight is finally made, NAIM is the betting favorite.
Cuevas was not a really good fighter. he should be favored, but I wouldn't be too shocked if Maidana won.
Cuevas was excellent... From 1976-1980, he was absolutely outstanding and ran roughshod over his opponents... he's one of those guys who was up and down early in his career (turned pro at 13) ... got a shot at a title, made the most of it and the title gave him confidence... "Not a good fighter" guys don't defend their titles 11 times with ten wins by KO, they just don't... He ran into a stylistic nightmare in Hearns and that was the end of him - he never recovered, but he was a good fighter and a great, great puncher in his prime years
number of defense is not all that. Plenty of fighters have defended numerous times and weren't very good (relatively speaking of course). He has a few good/decent wins, but as soon as he faced the elites, he got crushed like a bug and wasn't competitive at all.
It's absurd... The guy was a dominant champ who lost to one of the most uniquely problematic opponents in history, which finished him... By the time he faced Duran he was a washed up fighter... For four years he was a dominant champion who battered every contender placed in his path... He did this when there were just two belts, not 5 or 6... He was excellent
You can overate him as you want, based on his number of defense, but the guy wasn't anything special at the elite level. He wasn't able to be competitive against the cream. He was pretty much an elite level can opener, and as very overated cause he look spectacular against devent competition, but looked pathetic and was koed easilly against the 2 best fighters he fought. Who was his best vctory, Angel Espada, Pete ranzany ? Good fighters, whitout a doubt, but it's arguable that they are better than Broner. As I say, I would pick him against Maidana, but I sure as hell wouldn't be that shocked if he lost.
You're right. He should be ashamed of himself for getting his ass whupped by Hearns, and Duran. Far more honorable to lose to Khan, Kotelnik, and Alexander. Maidana has about as much a chance at beating Cuevas as Angulo would have against Julian Jackson.
Losing to Hearns, even the way he did, is no disgrace. And Cuevas was finished at the time of the Duran fight. Trying to attach any significance to the Duran fight is misleading. And if you want to talk about overrated fighters, let's start with Maidana after beating Broner. Maidana is pretty good, but Cuevas was better. And if they fought it would just be a matter of time before Cuevas lands some of his big hooks and then the fight is over.
What the Hell? This might be the worst nickname you have ever given a fighter...and that's saying something.
You Obviously DIDN'T Get the Memo, JOE NAMATH... Maidana is NEW & IMPROVED Now...It's like a Movie Studio Added CGI Special Effects to Him...He Got w/Roberto Garcia & Beat Adrien Broner, Which is All the EVIDENCE You Need, of DRASTIC Improvement, from What REED's Been Told...REED has a Great Deal of Respect for Pipino Cuevas, but he Simply WOULD NOT Stand a Chance vs. Marcos Maidana 2.0...
