In a surprising box office outcome, the low budget teen romance The Fault in Our Stars practically came out of nowhere and opened at 'event' like numbers of $48.2 million to easily claim the number 1 spot. The $12 million film based on the John Green best seller had a mostly young female audience (85%) demonstrating once more that women alone can make or break a movie.
Fault did most of its business on Friday $26 million, but had a 54% decline on Saturday. The movie will most likely finish its run with close to $100 million.

Maleficent drops to th second place with $33.5 million which is good news for the Disney production. It has grossed over $125 million domestically in two weeks. It will end its run with close to $200 million. Worldwide the Angelina Jolie movie has grossed $335 million so far.

Bombing in the third place on the weekend it was supposed to dominate, Tom Cruise's latest scifi epic of $178 million budget Edge of Tomorrow opened with $29.1 million. This is a weak opening for a major Tom Cruise summer film. It opened with lower numbers than Cruise last scifi Oblivion which had a $37 million opening and domestically finished with a disappointing $89 million. That film was saved by the international market and so will this one.

X-Men Days of Future Past claimed the fourth spot with $14.7 million for a current domestic total of $189 million and $609 million worldwide. Franchise wise the film will rank #3 domestically, but #1 at the worldwide lifetime grosses.

Box office numbers don't make a good movie.

This isn't 1997. Nobody gives a shit about Tom Cruise unless it's a Mission Impossible movie.

His last few films have bombed domestically , but he is still a big draw internationally.

True, Cruise might be not be the star he once was in the U.S, but he's still one of the worlds most famous actors and his films always do well internationally.

Cruise is doing remarkably well for an actor who's been making movies since the 80s. Obviously the younger audiences (20s and under) aren't attending but the older audiences are.

I doubt that any studio will put him again as the leading man in a big budgeted scifi film.

Wouldn't that actually depend on how much they value international profits? Internationally the sci-fi films do well, and it seems to be the same for comic book films as well. It seems we are in a new film era. Americans don't seem to be the big movie goers we once were and I think Anthony posted some article that said international markets were actually dictating a lot of the Hollywood studio decisions. It's a new day bro.

The international revenues has saved his last two films from losing money, but did not actually showed enough profit to justify the big budgets.

scifi usually does good here, but when you have a movie like Fault of our stars out, where the females have been pushing for over a year. It's just one of those fucking things where they will drag their man to see it the opening week and then watch 2 times alone.

that wasn't the case here since 82% of the 'FAULT' audience was female of which 79% was under the age of 25. That means 'girls night out to the movies' Most of the audience for 'EDGE' was male with 73% over the age of 25. In other words, Edge was a mainly male adult attraction while younger males were scattered between MALEFICENT, X-MEN, and the rest of the films.

Is fun to watch movies with someone you like and shares the same interest in the film. That said, I prefer to go alone if the person I came with is a freaking parrot who cannot keep his/her freaking mouth shut while the movie is playing (or like my wife that once the movie starts she immediately starts text messaging and posting in Facebook...if not interested in the movie, stay the fuck at home with the kids!!!).

I don't generally go to the movies because it's such an outrageous ripoff... I can only remember one time where I went alone... It would have been when the "Phantom menace" or whatever the fuck it was called came out... Like pretty much every boy of my generation, I grew up with the Star Wars films and the idea of a movie that dealt with the "before" time seemed cool/nostalgic to me (i.e. how did Vader become Vader, whatever) ... There was a theater up the street from where I worked... It was slow at work so they were offering early leave (with PTO used) to anyone interested, first come first serve... I said fuck it and went...

Theater was packed, movie was lame
