Btw Mexican assassin isn't original, Roger Mayweather used it in the '80s & that's why Roach used it for Pac.. I don't think it's a big deal, mostly because of that connection & also because in a perverse way it pays homage to the fact that everyone knows the lighter weights are/were loaded with top notch Mexican talent

Semi-related note, imagine if Ray Arcel could've gotten ahold of a guy like Maidana or Mayorga? Not saying they'd be anywhere what The Duran was, but it'd create a formidable beast for sure..

What about Pacquiao? Do you think he would have become more improved and polished regardless of trainer? And Khan? He looked better to me with Roach, a tad less boxbotish.

Even that big scrub Chavez Jr. Everyone he trains seems to improve. I don't think the same of Garcia, he's more hit and miss. The only person that has looked significantly better is Maidana.

I actually don't dislike either guy that much in the sense that they bring characters to boxing
That said...Freddie does talk a lot of shit and while I think he is a decent trainer..he acts like he is the best. I don't think he is.

One example is PAC, he has a great fighter...maybe helps him a little to be more two handed but if you look at the Marquez fights, each one PAC looks worse! And Freddie is always talking shit

 

Admittedly his best performance was the 1st fight. But like I said before - ironically before getting KTFO, he was clearly outboxing Marquez for the first time. He looked good, and was boxing very well.

I'm not trying to excuse Roach, I don't really like the guy & think he's a prick. I just don't think the nickname is necessarily part of that, and don't see "Mexican Assassin" as a big deal coz of the Roger Mayweather connection.. I wasn't aware Uncle Roger did it to be an asshole explicitly, that was before my time (but an interesting tidbit).

Pac has improved in very basic ways (imo). Thing is, he got outboxed by Morales and Marquez (repeatedly) when he'd already been with Roach for years. Khan is still immensely reliant on his physical skills, Chavez Jr still relies on his size and ability to take punishment. When those attributes are mitigated, they have no answer - and that's where a trainer should be filling in gaps. I'm just not impressed. I don't think Roach is a BAD trainer, but I do think he is HUGELY overrated. Garcia isn't a HOF trainer or anything, but nobody claims he is.
