Spinks is a stinky ass fighter. And coming up with some one-sided matchup just because it favors stinky over a fighter I liked to watch isn't going to change that. To prove Spinks is stinky, take Spinks vs. Qawi. Could anyone have imagined Qawi involved in a boring fight? Well, for those that could not, it would soon become clear even the most spirited fighters like Qawi can be in a stinker when they're matched up with Spinks stink personified.
This is what I'm talking about with Qawi... Qawi tasted some hard shots from Spinks and he didn't like it much... from there Spinks jabbed him silly and schooled him... People act like Qawi was this caged animal that could not be tamed... The reality is that he was a careful, defensively sound fighter who came forward not because he was a savage, destructive beast but because he HAD TO come forward since he was 3 feet tall... He lived off of bobbing and weaving and countering right hands, he was great at it... But he wasn't Joe Frazier no matter how much people reinvent him... The Holyfield fight is atypical of Qawi, not typical
Spinks stunk out that entire fight. If he tamed Qawi, it was by holding and leaning on him everytime Qawi got close.
Well, if we're going back to the Qawi vs Foster matchup, in Qawi's defense, Foster was NOT as good a technician as Spinks. He WAS a bigger puncher though, and I do think his power would make Qawi gun shy. I NEVER said Qawi couldn't be tamed either. All I said was, he was a better fighter than Saad.
Foster's jab > Spinks' Jab, IMO ... Spinks was better on the move, though I don't see how Qawi was better than Saad, he certainly isn't anymore accomplished. I'd rate them about the same... In the 10-20 range at Light Heavyweight all time
I see Qawi being better than Saad by the fact that Saad was never even a TINY bit competitive with Qawi in either fight. Had the wars taken something outta Saad? Yes, but Qawi basically ruined him with the beating he gave him in their first fight. I don't believe Saad was completely shot until after that pounding. I think Saad was ALWAYS made for Qawi.
Bullshit... Guy had to lose 3 pounds the day of the first fight just to make weight... he was wasted, had nothing... all of that in addition to being on the decline to begin with... He was ready to be taken as it was and then weight drained on top of it Donald Curry wasn't the tiniest bit competitive with Lloyd Honeyghan, either... doesn't mean a thing
In the rematch he had nothing. In the first fight, he fought back hard, but was simply countered to death, and bullied around. It's easy to imagine an A-game Curry being too sharp, and talented for Honeyghan. It's harder to imagine Saad ever coping with Qawi. There's a reason Spinks boxed Qawi, and didn't stand in front of him. Saad would ALWAYS stand in front of Qawi and trade with him, and as a result, lose.
What was your explanation again for the success Qawi had against Holyfield. I'm pretty sure it was simply that it didn't count? Or something? It was just an exception?
I think Qawi was a terrific fighter, and that he would gave hell to Foster. In fact, I think I would pick him.
Sorry, bud...but I can't get behind this at all. Maybe Qawi was better prime for prime...MAYBE. But their two fights don't shed any light on that for me at all. Too close to the end of Saad's days and Qawi was in his best years.
Well...Holyfield did only have 11 pro fights and had never gone past 8 rounds going into their first fight. It was definitely a learning experience for Holyfield against a veteran champ with a lot more experience. Qawi was a big step up from the likes of Chisanda Mutti & Anthony Davis, but Holyfield still got the win.
If there's one thing that gets me started, it's a lack of appreciation for offensive boxing. That is, the ability of fighters like Qawi to win rounds and win fights not merely by over - powering their opponent with punches, but also not with careful defense and retreat, but with careful and measured offense, delivered without telegraph, and with defense every bit the concern of any cutey, but not to eclipse the spectacle of constant and clean offense.
I think we all can agree that neither Braxton nor Franklin would've been competitive with the real magic man, Tarver
i'll take this emoticon as a sign you realize the MAGIC Man wouldve made those two chaps look as formidable as Toni Braxton and Aretha Franklin
Tarver had Hell trying to handle the pressure of Glenn Johnson. Qawi would beat the black off him, and the cocaine outta him.
Glen John son's schooling and eventual KO of RJJ was mastery. More so than Tarver, I think Johnson showed how to beat RJJ.
