I don't even think taking the kid away is the right idea. But teaching Peterson how to discipline properly and working with the family is the way to go. Like I said I am for discipline. An occasional slap to the thigh or butt. But in reality there are much better forms of discipline that don't include physical contact. IMO corporal punishment is an attempt at an easy fix. I hit you, it's done, let's move on. Other forms of punishment take real time, effort and patience. But the results are much more effective. I have seen parents actually take pleasure in hitting their kids. I have seen parents upset when hitting their kids. Both are wrong. AP looks like he was angry here. There should not be marks on that's kids body like that even from a switch.

this is not true at all. Taking away a computer or internet access is way more effective. Hitting is lazy and temporary. When i was a kid, i would rather get hit with a belt than have my TV taken away. That pain doesnt last but for a few minutes.
There is no opinion. It's fact. He went overboard and abused his kid. It's not illegal to hit your kid or even hit them with a belt. But when you leave marks and break the skin. that is wrong and went too far. And the fact the kid does not live with him, proves he has very little experience in dealing with punishment or his child. THat is why he is in trouble now. It's not easy to make those kind of marks on your kid.

Yet you dont have any boys so you really have no clue about raising them. I can tell you from experience that hitting a boy is fine. But abusing him and breaking the skin like he is a slave isnt. And my boys are way more behaved when i threaten to take something away than when i hit them. Like i said, being hit with something is a temporary pain. It's very lazy. Because you dont have to sit there and make sure your kid is following the punishment. You just hit them and send them on their way. When actually ground a kid or take privileges away, you have to monitor them and make sure they are following the punishment.
I was too and switches, I reserved judgement until I googled the kids age as being four, I understand the severity of the punishment goes along with the severity of the wrong doing, I was just about to call bullshit until I read he was 4, that may a bit much for 4, but is it common and was that how I was raised, Yes, in which I thought was excessive then. I didn't need to see the pictures to know what the kid would look like after getting his ass beat with a switch. Those type marks and welts are par for the course. Anyone that's ever seen or had his/her ass whupped with a switch knows that's what the final result will look like. And if you didn't come out on the other end looking like this means you didn't get your ass tore up with a switch. On another note, some of the racist shit (on other threads) I've read from the usual suspects, I'd have no qualms in beating their asses with switches.
