Barring a one-punch KO yes, Jones and big, possibly by stoppage. Kovalev's chance of winning would be about 10%, which is more than most lt heavy champions in the history. Kovalew vs Qawi, Kovalev vs Dariusz or even Kovalev vs Moore, now those would be legit fights
Qawi would have beaten the living shit outta Kovalev, that's no interesting matchup. I agree, Kov vs DM is an interesting fight.
I don't think there is enough proof to be sure of that. Even though Kovalev isn't the biggest puncher ever, I think it is safe to say that nobody would just shrug his punches off and Qawi would get hit. Also, even though we don't know enough about Kovalev's chin, it is petty safe to say it is not glass. Qawi starts as a favorite since he is much more proven and he had perhaps qualities that enabled him to beat fighters whom Kovalev might not have (he closed the distance exceptionally well and did damage inside) but head-to-head, it is NOT a lock, simply because we don't know enough about Kovalev
Simply based on styles, Kov is made to order for Qawi. Kov's only edge on Qawi is that he's heavier handed. He has no other advantage. It wouldn't be enough to negate Qawi having a better chin, a better defense, and being too quick and dynamic on the inside. Kov would get chewed up Qawi. I could see Kov vs Saad being a more interesting fight, because Saad was a much easier target to find than Qawi. I like the idea of Kov vs DM more though. Kov never faced a fighter as strong, and as potent offensively as DM, and DM never faced a fighter as powerful and offensively potent as Kovalev.
And to answer the thread's question, the circa 94-00 Jones lights Kov up. Around 02-03, Roy's reflexes and feet started declining, so Kov has an outside shot against that Jones.
I don't think Kovalev is stylistically tailor made for anyone whose game is based on aggression, and that's my only point here. Kovalev would be much easier task for Spinks than Qawi was (and even that wasn't close), but head to head this is interesting. It could turn out that Kovalev isn't good enough to beat Dariusz either, so far he is pure question mark
If forced to choose at this pont, I'd pick Kov over DM. I think Dariuz ate too many shots coming in for me to pick him. Not saying DM was a punching bag like Rios, he was a quality fighter, but he was no defensive wiz.
Depends on how Kov handles Roy's power. As highly as I think of Roy, not even I think Roy would simply destroy him. Kov is too dangerous a puncher for Roy to go all out on him. Most likely scenario is Roy uses his speed, and cruises to a wide UD. If he gets a stoppage, it'd probably be late.
Roy by very wiiiide decision... much too fast and Kovalev doesn't have the right style and attributes to bridge the gap in quickness... He's forced to be too defensive out of respect for Jones' fast, hard shots
Exactly. And as yall all know, I'm a Jones groupie. But the most likely scenario here is Roy by wide UD.
Like I said, I don't think Roy would bother trying to finish Kov off, even if he hurt him. And Jones WOULD most likely hurt him at some point. But knowing the power Kov has, I think Roy would respect him enough to settle for a decision.
Kovalev would have a better shot at beating Jones than qawi imo. I dont think that Jones ko Kovalev, as he would be very cautious of Kovalev power. Most likely scenario is Jones UD in a tepid fight.
I think he'd have virtually no chance of beating either one to be honest, but Qawi would beat him up worse. But make no mistake, Kov has virtually zero chance of beating the 94-00 Jones.
We could wait long years to see that. Unless he moves up, I don't see anyone brave or stupid enough to go after him.
I still think this sort of style is the perfect one to beat RJJ. Aggressive counter puncher if you like, press the distance, feint allot, force Roy to lead and punch during the exchanges. So yeah id give Kov a pretty good chance - if the odds were long enough id give it a punt
I think there is truth to this but we've yet to see Kovalev eat a lot of punches and how he reacts. I'm not talking about only his chin, but what he does when he gets cracked and the opponent isn't in range to hit back. Roy was in with a lot of fighters with good beards but once they started taking blows they couldn't see coming (and with speed they've never encountered) almost all of them became gun shy. Kov was able to be patient with Hopkins, but he was also winning every round of the fight and taking little to no punishment of his own.
