As was expected The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1easily took the top spot at the box office with the year's best opening numbers beating Transformers 4: Age of Stinker's $100 million. But at $123 million this is the lowest opening in the beloved scifi franchise far from Catching Fire's $158 million opening or the first film's $152 million debut. Heck, its numbers are even lower than Harry Potter & the Deadly Hallows Part 1 & The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 with $125 m & $138 m respectively. The studio was expecting an opening of at least $150 million, no one predicted it will make much less than that. Mockingjay may or may not reach Guardians of The Galaxy year's best total o $330 million domestically, but a $300 million plus is a little uncertain right now.

On a far distant second place Big Hero 6 took a solid $20.1 million for three weeks total of $137 million. The Disney film can finish its domestic run with $200 million IF those pesky Penguins movie don't hurt it too much.

On the third place Interstellar added $15.1 million to its bank account for a 3 weeks total of $120.7 or less than Mockingjay's 3 days tally. The Christopher Nolan Contact-like scifi film will close its domestic run around $175 million or as much as Gone Girl final numbers.

Crashing badly in the fourth spot Dumb and Dumber To had a 62% drop from last week's debut and fooled some to $13.8 million for a two week tally of $57 million. It might or might not close its books with $100 million.

Rounding up the top five and winning that spot again for the third consecutive week, the Ben Affleck starrer Gone Girl continues acting like the Energizer Bunny as it keeps staying in the top five for the 8th consecutive week with $2.8 million and $156.8 million total. The film is director's David Fincher biggest hit ever and a sure candidate for Best Picture of The Year.
