I watched the documentary "All Or Nothing" about all the Bonds, which inspired me to start this thread. Outta the 6 chaps to play Bond, who was the best and worst? Admittedly, I haven't seen EVERY Bond movie, but I've seen at least 1 movie from 5 outta the 6. Never seen the Bond movie with George Lazenby, so I can't speak on him. I'd say Connery is still the best. He was the perfect mix of charisma, and darkness that Bond was intended to be. Plus, I just feel like when people say James Bond, Connery's version will ALWAYS be the first image that comes to mind. Secondly, I'd say Dalton. He was EXCELLENT as Bond, even though he got flack for not being "witty" enough. I guess he was too grimy for the role in the 80's, ahead of his time considering Daniel Craig's Bond persona is the same as Dalton's was. Dalton gets the nod over Craig however, simply because he had far more of the Bond "look" to him. Worst for me is Brosnan. I thought Pierce was a good Bond when I was a kid, but looking back, he was easily the worst of the bunch. Roger Moore is right in the middle for me. Not NEARLY as good as Connery, and Dalton. Not as good as Craig either, but close. But they're ALL better than Brosnan. Opinions?
I like Moore the best. But thin Connery was good too. I actually think that Dalton and Lazensby were the worst. everyone else is very good. Pierce was a great bond. He was definately the coolest.
Brosnan cooler than Connery? In what fucking world is this? Connery is 85 years old, and STILL cooler than Pierce in his prime. Brosnan was just not believable as Bond to me. I'd rather 007 be a bad ass, than a walking bag of one-liners. Dalton was a bad ass. He simply was around at the wrong time to be a successful Bond. If Dalton was in his physical prime, and cast as Bond in the 00's, people would love him.
I think Pierce was tooooooooo much of a pretty boy to be a good Bond. Bond is meant to look handsome, YET rugged. That's not a PERSONAL knock against Pierce. He's a good actor, would never doubt that. Just not a good Bond.
connery struggled a lot as bond. He was always in situations where he didnt have full control. Pierce as bond was pretty much always in control. he was also way more suave. Also, let's not forget, this is not the same character we are dealing with. Meaning they are not different actors playing the same role. These are all different bonds. By that i mean, pierce brosnon showing up in a daniel craig movie as a former bond, is not out of the question since they are not the same 007.
Point taken on Pierce. I did think that Golden Eye was one of the better 007 movies. The others he made were pretty mediocre IMO.
Also, pierce is smooth in everything he does. Have you seen The Thomas Crown Affair and November man? He is just naturally smooth.
Connery is THE quintessential Bond, followed closely by Daniel Craig. Like Xplosive mentions, Dalton was a solid Bond who had the misfortune of starring in two very forgettable film. I like Brosnan a lot...more than Moore whose Bond was more a tongue-in-cheek parody of Connery even though The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only were highly entertaining. And George Lazenby was the worst one as he wasn't even an actor when he landed the job. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the only Bond film I couldn't finish watching because I couldn't stomach Lazenby.
By 'Best Bond' a lot of people are going to pick it with regards to their favorite movies. In which case, for me: 'Goldfinger' - Connery 'Casino Royale' - Craig 'The Spy Who Loved Me' - Moore
I just don't get James Bond I guess the movies are reasonably entertaining but I barely remember them half the time. I always associate Roger Moore with Bond because he was Bond when I was little
Yeah people our age, typically dont like the old bonds. Im the exception. I just started getting into him about 10 years ago after watching all the movies back to back. But you are correct that typically the bond that you grew up with turns into your favorite. Since i really didnt grow up with any of them since, like i said, i started 10 years ago, i find moore to be the best.
Well, growing up I hadn't watch any James Bond film until 1973 'Live & Let Die" and to me was hard to accept Roger Moore in that character since he was just freaking Simon Templar from The Saint tv series and the partner of Tony Curtis in The Persuaders 1971 tv series! In other words, to me he was just a tv actor playing Bond. Then also in 1973 Dr. No was re-released and I went to watch it to see what all the fuss was about Connery's Bond. He was James Bond. Period. No doubt. He was born to play that role.
