Furious 7 repeated for the third week in a row easily taking the top spot at the box office with $29 million. So far the film has grossed $294.4 million domestically and it is the current most successful movie of the year. Worldwide the film has surpassed the $1 billion mark in 17 days, something that neither ‘Avatar’ nor ‘The Avengers’ accomplished.

Debuting in the second spot Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 took home $24 million which is not bad, but lower than the first film debut ($34 million). This sequel has already made history as the lowest rated film ever: 0% rotten on the tomatometer!

Also debuting this week the microbudgeted horror film Unfriended opened in the third place with a healthy $16 million. While that number doesn’t look great keep in mind that this film cost only $1 million to produce. So it IS already a big hit for the little independent film company that produced it.

Holding well in the 4th spot the Fox Animation family film Home added $10.3 million to its ark. After 4 weeks the film has grossed $142.6 million and worldwide $269 million.

Dropping two spots from its debut last week the romantic film The Longest Ride starring Scott Eastwood (Clint’s son) grossed $6.8 million for a two week total of $23.5 million.

Three other films debuted this week, but failed to lure audiences. Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom opened to $4.7 million in the 7th spot. Since the film opened nationwide in 2,012 screens the only way its numbers can go in the following weeks is down. Jonah Hill and James Franco were not taken seriously by audiences as their film True Story bombed in the 11th spot with just $1.9 million. But that is nothing compared to the reportedly $50 million budget Ridley Scott produced Child 44 which became an orphan in the 17 spot with $600,000. This is black eye for the soon to be Mad Max, Tom Hardy, who to date has been unable to be the star in a successful film. Will 'Mad Max: Fury Road’ finally break his unlucky streak?
