Boxing Match hurt Ultron from breaking box office record

Everything was in place: the marketing, the fandom anticipation, the foreign market record breaking numbers, the lack of any new release to compete with, the first night (Thursday) and first day (Friday)astounding numbers that made all entertainment predictors declare that the new Marvel sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron was enroute to shatter its predecesor all time box office opening record of $207 million domestically. Everything pointed to that...until Saturday numbers saw a HUGE decline. It wasn’t bad word of mouth as fans just plain loved Ultron. No, it was that so-called ‘Fight of The Century’Mayweather vs Pacquiao that kept most moviegoers at home to watch the boxing match (some idiots add that the Kentucky Derby had a role in that too...tsk tsk). Ultron came ‘short’ with ‘just’ $187.7 million...that makes it the second best film debut ever, elbowing Iron Man 3 to the third spot. Marvel can boast that the three top biggest debuts ever belongs to them. Excelsior! Worldwide the film has grossed $626.6 million in just 10 days. By the end of its run it would have easily surpassed $1 billion total.

The rest of movies this week are not worth commenting much as their grosses were ‘puny’ in comparison (Age of Adeline came second with $6.2 million; Furious 7 droped to third with $6.1 million, Paul Blart 2 fourth spot with $5.5 million, Home $3.3 million).

How many buys were there for Mayweather-Pacquiao? 3 million? That would have cost the movie 3 million x $7 a ticket = $21 million. Many people went to bars and cafes to watch the fight. So it would have cost the movie even more.

Average movie tickets in USA are higher than $7; $9-$10 in most cities, cheaper at second rate indie theaters.

The Monday official numbers puts Ultron doing a little better than reported on Sunday with its three days total tally being $191.2 million.
