There was FAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR more science in Chavez's style than Canelo's. Not even in the same universe!

There was a purpose and thought to EVERYTHING Chavez did. No energy, or punches wasted, ALWAYS in perfect position, always a very tight defense, always a method behind his violence. Chavez was ALWAYS thinking and his ring IQ was 10x higher than Canelo's.

I get what you're saying, but I think you're severely overrating Canelo's "science". Canelo was basically clueless at many points against Lara. Lara LOST that fight more than Canelo won it.

I wouldn't be shocked if Canelo beat Cotto. We all know Cotto doesn't have a great chin, we all know Cotto doesn't have a great defense, and we all know that even though he CAN box, at the end of the day Miguel Cotto is an offensive fighter who WILL trade with Canelo.

I'd be more worried about Canelo in with a guy like Andrade, who doesn't have a crowd pleasing style, but who has a style to exploit Canelo's weaknesses.

Canelo looked like he had the same training regimen as JMM before Pacquiao 4.

Trout: Close fight which was tainted by the bullshit opening scoring which forced Trout out of his game plan. I had Canelo winning barely.

Lara: Another close fight which Lara blew by fighting negative in the late rounds. I had Lara winning, but he only had himself to blame for the loss.

On a positive note for Canelo, I applaud his willingness to fight the best. I think Canelo personally would be brave enough to fight GGG right now, but I think Oscar knows better and wants to wait awhile. GGG is what? 33? They'll probably wait a few years til they think GGG is on the decline. No Canelo hate in saying this, but Golov would beat the fuck outta him at this present time.

Cotto is a different story. I'm gonna wait to see how Cotto looks against Geale before I make a final prediction, but right now I see that matchup at only about 55-45 in Cotto's favor.

I see no evidence of any real progress... This fight was an expected cakewalk... Kirkland is awful and has the chin of a princess

Yeah, I see the same fighter. He was nailing Kirkland with the same combos he was nailing Mosley with a few years old. Difference being, even shot Mosley has a good chin. Kirkland doesn't.

I don't see the kid getting much better. I mean, what's he gonna learn new being trained by the same guys who've trained him since he was 15? Unless REED and Ugo are suggesting that he fires them and hires a new trainer. But SOMETIMES, it's better to just stick with the guys who got you to the dance.

I don't see him getting better either but this is not about tweaking little things here and there. He can't get a better chin but he certainly needs to improve his defense. I don't see how that happens unless he gets new trainers. Like i said earlier in this thread, there is absolutely no nuance to his game. It's just go straight forward and try to overhelm his opponents. Anybody with a good punch that can hold his ground is going to be a nightmare for him. That's why this is was one of the easiest fights to predict ever.

At this point, I can't see a DRAMATIC change being made to his D.

Tbh, Canelo's defense isn't HORRIBLE. It's just mediocre. A horrible defense is Provo, Rios, and Kirkland. Canelo isn't AS hittable as those guys. He does a semi-decent job of blocking shots once in awhile. He just isn't that hard to find either, nor will he ever be. The good news for him is that he has a dependable chin. But if you put in with Golov, who's an ACCURATE power puncher who will force him back, then he's a goner.

BTW - Canelo is a sloth on his feet, which is the reason why he comes in straight lines, and can't cut the ring. Attacking from different angles, and cutting the ring requires a certain athleticism and ability that Canelo lacks.

Guys like GGG, and Chavez Sr might not SEEM like the most athletic guys, but they possess/possessed a certain foot quickness and fluidity which allows/allowed them to quickly close the distance. Canelo simply wasn't born with that ability. He has above average handspeed, but his feet are painfully slow. There's no fixing that problem.

Exactly... Canelo is what he is, a fairly mediocre world-level fighter who is a standout mainly because his division is a wasteland ... I expected him to "look great" against Kirkland who is made to order for him

I think that was Kirkland's first fight in 17 months. That says something.

Ratings are in: Canelo-Kirkland was the most watched cable fight in almost 10 years.

    Agreed.

Don't see a huge amount of science to Canelo's style tbh, he simply happens to have a more patient, counterpunching style than his nationality and physique would suggest. He looked like an utter scrub against Floyd, even more than smaller, older fighters like Guerrero.

And no I don't see much room for improvement, he reached this level a few years ago and has stayed the same. He is what he is I think, it's not like he's a novice, he's had a lot of fights, against respectable comp.
