That's not a fair comparison thoug. Lewis had some exciting fights. e.g. Vitali, Mercer, Ruddock, Morrison....

I think Floyd's gotten a bad rap for being boring in his most recent performance, but the guy has spent most of his career in the pocket. I'd much prefer that and shoulder rolls over the in and out, in and out of Roy..............and Lummux has been in plenty of good scraps. The Tua fight is actually one of the best examples out there of a guy (at one time thought to be a blood & guts brawler) who had his heart completely taken out of him early in a fight and refused to engage for the rest of the bout.

I also have a hard time shaking how many years that Roy went without me giving a shit about who his next opponent was, until he got in the ring with Tarver the first time.

Love him or hate him, Floyd has been in plenty of compelling match-ups. IMO, his biggest stretch of "I don't give a shit" fights, was the 5 years between Castillo and De La Hoya. Roy had a good 9 years between Toney & Tarver..........and no, the Johnny Ruiz fight is not considered "compelling" to me, though I'm glad Roy beat the piss out of him.

There's NOfuckingWAY a Fan Can OBJECTIVELY Say the Ruiz Fight WAS NOT "Compelling", Bro...

33lb Weight Discrepancy, Not to Mention Height, Youth, Strength Advantages for Ruiz...If REED Remembers Correctly, You Were 1 of those Guys that DOUBTED Roy Would Even TAKE the Fight...But NOW You're Saying it WASN'T "Compelling"???...

Basically, You REFUSE to Be Impressed by Anything Roy Jones Did, Which is Your Prerogative...But Bear in Mind, w/Out Roy-Ruiz, Does Pac DARE to Move Up to Face Dela, Hatton, Cotto, etc???...

I did doubt he would take the fight, you're right. Ultimately the whole thing annoyed me more then anything. The promotion, the fight itself, the declaration of anybody being involved with that fight being THE "Heavyweight Champion".

I was somewhat interested in seeing how Roy would do against a bigger guy who tried to use his weight and maul him on the inside. Roy got a ref (Nady), who disallowed any of that. Ultimately it was better for the sport Nady reffed the fight the way he did, and I'm glad Roy beat him up. I don't think it was a great fight for Roy's resume however. It was simply a smart way for Roy to grab a "Heavyweight" title for himself.

Even if you do count that fight as compelling, it's still about 9 years between Toney & Ruiz.

Roy WAS an impressive fighter. I'm not going to deny that. That's what's always been frustrating to me. He was a wasted talent IMO. Anybody who convincingly beats Toney AND Hopkins in their primes (or close to it), has to be someone special.

If he had the same drive to fight in the middle of his career as he has had at the end of his career, when he was essentially shot to shit, I'd be talking about him in much different tones then I am now.

the problem with RJJ is that he was schooled by Montel Griffen whilst in his prime...that never happened to Floyd
Jones clearly lost rounds by being outboxed in a simple and embarrassing fashion...Floyd only lost some close competitive rounds where he was outworked

That's a crazy train I can't get on either. Montell was a negative fighter and Roy figured him out in the end, despite some disgusting flopping antics by Montell.

Riiiight, it was the REF, NOT Roy's SPEED of Hand and Foot, DEFENSE, UNORTHODOXY or Surprising POP that Night:wack:...

Particularly EARLY DOORS in the Fight, Ruiz TRIED to Do what he Does...@ the Opening Bell, He Bumrushed Roy to the Ropes & Landed a FLUSH Hook...@ Another Early Juncture, he Knocked Roy Back on his Heels & Roy RESPONDED by Standing his Ground, Bolo Punching and EARNING Respect...

But You're Telling REED that was Because of Nady???...So When Roy BUCKLED and BLOODIED Ruiz in Round 3 or 4, was that ALSO Nady???...

You're Suggesting Roy was ASSISTED in a Way he Clearly WASN'T...Why, Because You've Never EVER Been a Fan or Sooooo Much as a Casual APPRECIATOR of Roy Jones...& That's Fine...But Don't See Hear Offering FAUX "Objectivity" in Regards to How Compelling the Ruiz Fight was...

I was hardy a Roy fan but I do agree with this. Since when did any referee stop Ruiz from clinching and mauling? All the refs complained him, I think some even took points away from him, but Ruiz never stopped. In the Jones fight, he didn't get any deductions, he could have rushed Jones much more, but he became a pacifist, even gun-shy early in the fight. Obviously it didn't happen without a reason.

Jones' counters were so quick that he didn't see them coming, and they were hard enough to make him think twice about attacking. That hesitation left Jones room to do practically whatever he wanted to, especially after the fourth-round wobble of Ruiz.

C'mon REED, I'm trying to be as diplomatic as I possibly can here.

RJJ wins the fight either way, but are you really saying Nady reffing the fight, it looks exactly the same as Joe Cortez reffing the fight. RJJ gets a lot more worn down and a lot more roughed up if Ruiz fights the way he was normally allowed to fight?

Johnny Ruiz gets himself inside and wrapped up against much bigger and more powerful men his entire career then Roy Jones could ever hope to be, but somehow Roy is soooooo explosive and fast that Johnny Hugs Alot can't ever close the distance. It had absolutely nothing to do with the approximately 4000 times that Nady broke them up within 1 second of body on body contact.

I wanted to see Roy "work" for the win. The masochistic side of me wanted shitbag Ruiz to fight like the usual shitbag Ruiz.......for once I actually WANTED to see that. Instead Nady, just let Roy, be Roy. I'll re-iterate this again so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Nady called the fight correctly. The biased part of me wanted him to call it like Cortez would have called it simply because I wanted Roy to face a little adversity for once.

C'mon man, this is a crock of shit!

Nady was waaaaay more strict then any other referee had ever been with Ruiz. It's pretty fucking deluded to argue otherwise.

But he didn't take any points away, and when did Ruiz listen to the refs anyway? That was my point. Yes, Nady was looking to break them up quickly, but after the first round Ruiz didn't give him a reason to do so, since he was so passive himself.

Furthermore, we have seen that passiveness from Ruiz in two other fights too, against Chagaev (early rounds) and Haye. He didn't clinch much in these, and in both fights he was up against a guy who could punch quick and hurt him with his counters. Unless of course you buy his explanation that he "wanted to be more entertaining because of the viewers"

So Nady never broke them up after the first round? :dunno:

Of the fights you mentioned, which one set the precedent? Which ones happened after judges, promoters, TV stations, referees and fans had long grown tired of and dismissed his tactics as illegal and an eyesore.

Who gives a shit if Nady didn't let Ruiz hold? He was absolutely right not to. When other refs allowed Ruiz to hold, that's something THEY did wrong.

FWIW I liked watching RJJ but I didn't think the Ruiz fight was anything great either. I do think he should've either made Tarver move up to heavy, or just retired after that fight. Going back down a weight class (when you're already in shape) as you advance in age is never a good idea.

You gotta be trolling me. That was a close fight and Griffin was doing surprisingly and amazingly well in a fight where his reflexes looked every bit as on par with Roy's. However, Griffin was obviously slowing down and RJJ was on his way to a KO win before the DQ shot landed. As for Floyd not getting schooled in his prime, let's not forget that a lot of people thought Floyd lost his first fight to Jose Luis Castillo. Yeah, I know it didn't happen but then again neither did the so called schooling of Roy Jones by Montell Griffin.

How good was Roy you ask? He was amazing, he was good enough that for the first several years it meant something just to win a round from the guy. Think about those first few years Lou Del Valle got to run around retelling people about the time he dropped Roy Jones Jr, and it actually meant something. Hell, their are a few of us who believe Roy let those first few KO's happen because he was tired of Lou Del Valle popping up at casino's, weigh in's and cock fights just to roll up and say "hey Roy, I knocked you down".

I wasn't much of a fan, but to me there is little doubt that RJJ was a great fighter. My only real complaint with him is not doing more at 168 before moving up to 175. There are a lot of names missing from RJJ's resume because of that. I have heard various reasons why those fights didn't happen, but it strikes me that if RJJ really wanted the fights, he would have found a way to make them happen. And "he would have beaten them anyway" doesn't work for me.

Roy Jones Jr was fragile. It's no wonder now after he got KTFO by Tarver with 1 punch why he handpicked all his competition. Even Lennox Lewis put his chin out there and made a brawl of it with countless fighters. The only guy Lewis was scared to death of being hit by was David Tua for obvious reasons. Sometimes Lewis would let his hands go even against guys his own size or guys with power (Holyfield, Grant, Klitschko, Mercer, Briggs, Morrison, etc). But he didn't dare try anything with Tua.

Roy Jones was a great fighter, just not as good as his dominance over outreached opponents lead us to believe.

Roy was way more exciting, and in his prime he would have dismantled and probably KO'd Mayweather. Faster, harder punching, smarter, classier, better in every way. When Roy fought until the tail of his career he WON in ways that left zero doubts. Mayweather fights you have to rewatch a couple times to really convince yourself that you watched a really good boring fight that he did actually win clearly.

Im talking about the hypothetical 'rewatch' that Floyd nut huggers always talk about when explaining what is required for boxing simpletons to observe how dominant Floyd was in a boring as shit match where neither guy appeared to land much.

Funny the way some people will try to justify comparing Floyd and Roy. Try to diminish it all you like, but Floyd had a MUCH greater career than Roy and it's not close. Even as an old man Floyd is winning career defining fights, not getting KTFO by career journeyman. Was Roy more exciting? To me he was boring as hell to watch so I don't know about that either.
