The new disaster film, San Andreas, outperformed the predictions of a $40 million opening, by snatching a Rock-solid (pun intended) debut of $53.2 million. This is the best opening ever for a Dwayne Johnson solo film, not part of an ensemble cast (Fast & Furious, G.I. Joe), and puts him back as a reliable star after the so-so Hercules fiasco from last year. While the film was basically trashed by critics (48% rotten), audiences didn’t gave a shit and loved it giving it an A- in Cinemascore ratings. That means the film will hold well for the next two weeks or so until certain dinosaur theme park movie opens.
Holding beautifully well in the second distant spot, Pitch Perfect 2 added $14.3 million for a three weeks domestic total of $147 million. On the international market it is lagging behind the domestic numbers with a total of $80.7 million or $228.2 million worldwide which is now among the most successful musical films ever.
In the third spot and still doing poorly, last week’s #1 film, Tomorrowland had a 58% drop and took a mere $13.8 million for a 10 days total of $63 million. But the bad news extends at the international scene too as it has grossed only $70 million in the majority of the overseas screens for a worldwide total of $133.2 million. The expensive Disney film might finish its worldwide run with $200 million or so which are ‘Lone Ranger’ numbers to warrant a write-off for the Mouse company.
George Miller’s new classic masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road has the lowest percentage drop of the top ten list with just a 44% drop from last week. The post-apocalypse actioner added $13.6 million (almost tied with 'Tomorrowland’ and who knows if Monday’s final accurate numbers puts it on top of it). The film has now grossed $115.9 million domestically, but unlike 'Pitch Perfect 2' its overseas numbers are even better: $165 million for a worldwide current total of $280.9 million (take THAT Pitches!!!) With a few important markets still awaiting for its release, the film is headed to not only recoup its investment, but make a profit too (eat your doom predictions, Panchy!!!) :blackcloud:
In the 5th spot Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron added $10.9 million for a current domestic total of $427 million and $1.321 billion worldwide. Sometime next week the comicbook film will beat the last Harry Potter film number to claim the #5 all time spot worldwide. It still has a long journey to beat Furious 7 $1.506 billion numbers. Furious 7 benefit of having zero competion during spring while the Marvel film has all the summer blockbusters to compete with.
Finally Cameron Crowe ensemble cast Aloha bombed miserably in the sixth spot with just $10 million. The film was also trashed by the majority of critics with a 17% rotten rating.

    Saw it yesterday. HORRIBLE. Fucking H O R R I B L E.

Put it up there with 2012, and Day After Tomorrow as amongst the worst disaster movies.

    2/10

So you agree with the critics.

I enjoyed 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow as the corny improvable not-to-be-taken-serious popcorn films that they were. I guess I'll enjoy this one too.

An enjoyable disaster movie to me is The Core. One of the best disaster movies, and didn't receive nearly as much hype as some of the others.

I don't think you'll enjoy San Andreas. I had high hopes for it, even after hearing the bad reviews, I thought maybe the critics are just being harsh. But nope! You can tell VERY EARLY ON that it's gonna be a shitty movie.

    I'll never re-watch it.

Actually, I shouldn't even put 2012 in that class. 2012 wasn't THAT bad. Bad, but not utter trash. It kept me interested in spots.

2012 is like Dog Day Afternoon good compared to San Andreas.

Well, you lost me there. IMO 'The Core' is one of the most boring disaster movies ever made. Totally forgettable. It took itself too seriously for having such a stupid premise. It is slightly better than 'Sharknado' though, but less fun. We can agree in that we disagree on disaster films.

xplosive thinks many movies that are average or even above average are horrible. Best to see it yourself. 2012 got much worse ratings than San Andreas who at least had 65% of the general audience liked it and almost 50% of the pros liked it.

This movie was all special effects. I wouldn't call it horrible. I'd give it 6/10 for special effects. Rest is...well there is no rest it's just special effects.

Don't know if it was all the negative reviews I'd been hearing that dropped my expectations, but I surprisingly really enjoyed this film. It wasn't just the earthquake CGI stuff either; the background stories totally worked for me and I really felt a connection towards the characters in this film and was even on the edge of my seat at times when they would get in danger. I also went with 3 other adults and we all enjoyed the movie.

Yup I expected that....that's why i refuse to watch it. Having Dwayne Johnson as the star is enough to keep me home tbh.

I'm with X on this. "The Core" boring? I don't know what film you were watching. Core was excellent.
