Takedowns mean you took control of the fight enough to take your opponent off of his feet. If you get taken down, you got taken down, regardless of what happens after. Are flash knockdowns meaningless too if the guy gets right back up? TFK
The bottom line on the Alvarez\Melendez fight is, it was a let down as far as what we were all expecting. When Gil landed the elbow in the first, it changed Eddie's gameplan. It took him the rest of the round to shake it off, and with his eye shut, he smartly opted toward a safety first approach. Why Gil did nothing to take advantage of this, we'll never know. I just think he doesn't have any heart and no killer instinct. If he gassed, that's even more embarrassing, as he didn't do much of anything offensively. At the end of the fight, Alvarez was in control, in spite of his eye. Eddie was the better fighter last night, and is the better fighter period. I think a fight with Benson Henderson makes all the sense in the world, with the winner being right in the mix of things. Some people are saying Eddie should fight Khabib, but right now that would be a step back for Khabib, as he should be getting a title shot, not risking his ranking fighting a lower ranked fighter. As far as Gil's next move, having lost 3 of his last 4, he needs to take a step back and fight someone outside of the top 10. He's pretty much at gatekeeper status now, and with as loaded as the division is, he's gonna be on the outside looking in. And after his complete and total non-effort last night, I'm in no hurry to want to see him fight again. TFK
TBH I don't really care either way, I am not a fan of either fighter. But I don't like bad decisions, so like Rios Vs Abril for example, I am annoyed the real winner got diddled.
It's delusional to think Alvarez belongs back in the mix. Despite the narrow win last, he's looked like a shot fighter in his 2 UFC outings. In 4 of his 6 UFC rounds so far he's been beaten like a dog that just pissed on the carpet. The dude showed heart, intelligence and desire last night and earned my respect but his days as a top MMA fighter are all behind him back in DREAM. Let's not get carried away after a disputed split decision.
Yeah, I have nothing against Eddie at all, in fact he is likeable enough and showed a lot of heart in both his UFC fights. But you're right, in 4 of his 6 UFC rounds he's basically been made to look like he doesn't belong in the UFC, at least not in the top tier of the UFC where he's been placed.
4 of 6? He won the 1st round against Cerrone. The next two, he got beat up. No shame in that though as Cerrone has been on a tear. Against Gil, one big shot in the first, and nothing of note the next two. Not exactly beaten like a dog. TFK
alvarez is a formidable guy at lightweight. he just beat Melendez who's a top 5 guy. unlike pettis, he didn't lose to clay guida in his ufc debut. instead he lost to a guy who's now next in line for a title shot. I don't think RDA is as good as he looked vs pettis and is beatable. the lightweight division is wide open imo.
I completely disagree. I think RDA and Pettis destroy Alvarez. I thought Alvarez just lost against a crappy, lethargic looking Melendez. Also, he got battered against Cerrone, it wasn't a competitive fight, he looked out of his depth. The same Cerrone who was destroyed with ease by Pettis. Pettis and RDA are the top 2, then Cerrone, then everyone else is a long way behind.
Khabib and Pettis are both injured. It's a shame Pettis is so injury prone. Lately he's been fighting once a year.
The main event was pretty damn good btw. Emphatic win, and just a pretty violent fight between two big dudes.
For a while now I haven't enjoyed or been interested in many UFC cards, but there have been some good ones recently, I hope it continues forthwith.
I enjoyed the UFC cards over the last 4 weekends. I was disappointed in some of the fights last weekend, but the main event made up for it. UFC 189 in July is the next big one. Conor McGregor / Jose Aldo and Rory MacDonald / Robbie Lawler.
I think Macihida-Romero on the 27th is a great match-up. I am actually going to bè at this one. Overall the card isn't great since it's the TUF Brazil finale but the main event should be interesting.
Erick Silva / Rick Story should be a good one too. Silva looks outstanding when he wins. I don't know if he'll make it to the top of the division, but he's fun to watch.
