Watching his ko loss to Mosley via youtube got me thinking. I remember in his prime he was a very dangerous fighter. He had a great chin with a go for broke can't lose mentality style. His best win was against a very good Vernon Forrest. He also gave Trinidad a very entertaining battle while it lasted "Keep in mind his best performances was @ Welterweight. He was never the same above that weight class. I feel ever since he came off poverty and started making good money he lost the desire for the sport which started the decline. That and his way of life definitely shortened his career.

So the question is, How good was he in his prime? How would he have done against Mosley, Delahoya, Trinidad, Cotto, Mayweather ect.... at his peak?

Loses to every last single one of them.

Now, in his prime do I think he could beat a guy like a Porter, Garcia, Brook, Khan, Thurman? Yes.

He has a shot against Cotto, but loses to the rest.

I wanna see how his countryman, the legendary Explosive Thin Man would fare against him, and whether or not the 15 pound weight advantage would be enough

He hit like a fucking truck. Not nearly as polished as Maidana, but they have similarities, especially before Maidana refined his style, but even then Mayorga is far more caveman. Carlos Maussa is more similar, but quite a bit worse, so I went with Maidana for comparison. However, if you speed up Maussa, you end up with Mayorga.

Mayorga made that style work at the world champion level more than once. He's the type of fighter who will always get his wins against fighters better than he is and always be susceptible to getting outboxed by a slickster not as good as he is. While I think Spinks was better, though, I thought Mayorga won their fight.

I don't think he was a particularly hard puncher. His technique was/ is ordinary.

Maussa lol, that guy looked like a retarded person in slow-motion. He was hard-punching and awkward enough to fuck Forrest's shit up inside three rounds. Also he was faster than Maidana with his hands. There is no evidence that he couldn't have beaten Mosley in his prime. After Tito ruined him completely he was still on almost even terms with Mosley until the 12th round.

Yeah I have to say he was a classic dangerman but anyone with a dash of handspeed, straight punches and a bit of balls should really be blowing him out of there.

How Forrest lost to the guy is a mystery.

How fucking Spinks beat the guy is a mystery.

Not to brag, but I can vividly remember being the ONLY one on the forum who predicted Spinks to beat him. I knew Cory's angles, and quickness would give him fits.

Good Point! Mayorga was doing pretty good in that fight considering Tito destroyed him.

I think he was a talented guy who could have been really good if he'd been coached properly. It's a testament to his ability that he was able to get to the level he did with such little boxing IQ

He is one of the guys who was easy to overrate when he got to the top and even easier to underrate when he fell from there.

His chin at his best was inhuman. I am not talking about the free shots act but the fact that he couldn't ride with punches at all, he bumped into them head first. Tito threw everything he had at Mayorga and was clearly the bigger guy, yet Mayorga only succumbed to the body shots. After the Tito fight he didn't look the same anymore. Also, Mayorga had quick hands and punched really hard.

I am all for a unique style that works but in Mayorga's case he could have been much better had he learned how to box even a little bit. The problem was, he got so far with his physical talent alone that it was too late to learn to box at that point. In fact, he might have made a better career had his chin been a little softer, in which case he should have learned some defense and techniques to get inside

I think Mayorga gets a bit TOO much credit for the Tito fight. Tito was faded and had been off 2 years. He had lost a lot of snap and velocity on his shots (please God, Double, do not start).

At 147, prime-for-prime, I think Tito gets rid of him a lot quicker.

Most world-class fighters could clench their neck muscles and take a free shot... Most don't do it because it's fucking stupid

I doubt you were the only one. I'd been calling Mayorga overrated for years and I'm sure I doubted him enough to think Spinks would beat him. It's starts with his power. The only evidence that he hits hard is one temple shot KO over Forrest and another KO over chinny-as-fuck 6-Heads-Lewis. People bitched about the Spinks win but Spinks not only beat the guy far and square but gave him a boxing lesson and showed us what a true pugilist with skills will do to an overrated brawler. Mayorga is and always was overrated. He got pretty far on hunger, awkwardness, and a granite chin but to be honest the fact that he lasted as long as he did against Mosely, and Tito still makes me shake my head.

Credit? Tito beat the fuck out of him. Landed over 60% of his shots. Had him wobbly in the first round

I thought Oscar did a job on him in 2006. Oscar was coming off a long layoff and was maybe hurt, briefly, once.

Oscar could not punch for shit at 154 so MAYBE Mayorgas chin was not that great, but maybe Oscar's speed and accuracy was the thing.

We have to remember Trinidad beat the BREAKS off Mayorga previously. Ricardo was never the same.
