Even the People in Ali's team thought that Ali was going to get hurt seriously. Do You think Ali feared Foreman?
I think that every fighter in history who put on a masterclass in a big fight had a healthy fear of their opponent. How else would they be pushed to perform at such a high level? You're not gonna be at your best against an opponent you think nothing of. So yes, I'm sure Ali deep inside had SOME level of fear getting into the ring that night. But as Cus D'Amato said, the hero and the coward both feel the same thing... Ali was a human being. Not a robot or a God. You don't think behind his supreme self confidence that he NEVER felt fear? Of course he did. He simply used the fear to be at his best, instead of letting it defeat him.
I think it was Tyson who said something along the lines of; "fear is like fire, if you control it you can cook your food and heat your home. If you can't it will burn your house down and kill you". Best analogy for it I think. Everybody feels fear.
The WAY Foreman Disposed of Frazier and Norton, as Compared to HOW Ali Fared Against them, was FRIGHTENING...So Yeah, Ali Probably had a Healthy DOSE of it, in Regards to Big George.... Still, Ali DARED to Be Great & Wasn't AFRAID to Lose in Pursuit of Greatness...Thus, the Fight was Made... REED:kidcool:
The thing people forget about the rope-a-dope was that even though it minimized clean shots taken, it was still an enormously punishing defensive strategy against a guy like Foreman... Ali avoided taking KO-type shots but he still had to absorb a lot of punishment to his flanks, his arms, etc.... He must've been sore as hell after that fight even though it was, comparatively, a far easier fight for him than he had against Frazier and Norton... The rope-a-dope basically failed against them, forcing Ali to use a mixed bag to have a chance to win, but it couldn't have worked better than it did against Big George
This was a pretty interesting article about the Rumble in the Jungle: http://www.thesweetscience.com/news...ted-on-the-40th-anniversary-of-foreman-vs-ali-
Foreman BATTERED Ali's Body that Fight...Somehow, Ali just Dealt w/It... As Great as Ali's CHIN was, his Punch Resistance to BODY Shots May have Been Even Better...Especially when you Consider the Chuvalo Fight, where Ali ALLOWED Chuvalo to Bang his Body Up, as he Intentionally Held his Arms AWAY from his Torso, Shit Talking Chuvalo All the While... REED:kidcool:
Fear is just one of many mountains the truly great routinely climb. Yes Ali was fearful. He also said he was "scared to death" of Liston. He was also a truly Great fighter in every sense of the word.
If you look back at the Frazier fights. wouldn't you think his defense is a bit over-rated? Pernell Whitaker he sure wasn't.
Yeah, I think the rope-a-dope would have been suicide against 87-88 Tyson. Mike was just far faster and more accurate than Foreman, and would have been hitting all the openings that slow ass George missed.
If there is one fighter that stood a chance of KOing any version of Ali, it would have to be prime Mike.
Ali went to hospital after that fight, another point which rarely gets discussed. His kidneys were shot to shit by the end of his careeer, while still a relatively young man of 36, 37. What killed him for the Holmes fight were the thyroid shots to lose weight. They sped up his metabolism, broke down lean muscle which put huge strain on his battered kidneys, as they are the organ responsible for dealing with denatured proteins, and the toxic side-effects of medication as banal as paracetamol. Total double whammy. Weakened kidneys weakened further by dealing with protein waste and tablets. He went into that ring a walking basket case and then they took 60% of his fucking money after the fact. It's easily one of the most shocking episodes in all of sporting history, when you sit down and look at it in detail.
