Jones is too fast for Hagler and at his best would match Marvin for stamina. Plus Jones is bigger, taller and has more power.
I think Jones entered his prime right at the point when he destroyed Thomas Tate. That was his last fight at 160 before beating Toney. I don't see Hagler beating that Jones. Too fast, too big, and powerful enough to get Hagler's attention and keep him honest.
Marvin Hagler ain't Thomas Tate. He isn't even a green-ass Bernard Hopkins or weight-dead James Toney.
Yes, but Jones ain't no blown up Lightweight or Welterweight and he's much better than all of the natural middleweights that Hagler fought.
And Jones isn't brittle legged Hearns, tiny Duran, Hamsho, or Tony Sibson. See how that works? Leonard proved that handspeed could be problematic for Hagler. And pleeeaaassee don't tell me it was because Hagler was old. We know he was, but what the Hell was Leonard????? Jones at 160 was bigger than Leonard, faster than Leonard, harder to hit than Leonard, and hit FAR harder than Leonard.
What it comes down to is I don't think Hag had the firepower to take Roy out, which would be his only chance since Roy is just plain too fast and too talented for Marv to outbox. It's a bad matchup for Hagler. I'd give G-Man a better chance of beating Jones, cause he had the power and range. Even though, G-Man was not as good as Hagler, and I'd pick Hagler to batter McCllelan.
Agreed. Gman would stand a better chance to beat Jones and style-wise hagler would have virtually no chance, not even a puncher's chance...and Hagler would beat gman every day of the week...although McClellan gives him a much harder time than Hearns does by virtue of being tougher.
'Outbox'? :dunno: If Maidana had been a less crumby version of himself he'd have decisioned Mayweather in their fight first- at no point was he 'outboxing' him. Hagler has the nous, timing, skill and sheer bloodymindedness to come through the fire and take Roy somewhere he'd never have been before.
Hagler walks through Jones IMO. History has shown that RJJ was hurtable if hittable. Hagler was a LOT better than anyone Jones fought. Deep Water. MTF
If the MW version of Roy got hurt or just made uncomfortable against Hagler or Monzon I don't think he'd respond well. I think people tend to retroactively overrate Roy and Floyd at 130 and 160. When you pick them over most greats you're either assuming they're going to mentally respond to resistance like their more experienced selves or that they're going to dominate with no real problems.
