Just what the title says. If there were three more rounds, it would have had a different outcome.

Leonard-Hearns II - 3 more rounds and Leonard stops his ass.
Morales-Barrera III - 3 more rounds and Morales stops his ass or wins a decision
Bruno-McCall - 3 more rounds and McCall knocks his ass out!
Hopkins-Taylor (both fights) - 3 more rounds and Hopkins gets the decisions
Wright-Trinidad - 3 more rounds and Wright stops his Puerto Rican ass!

    Any more?

    Thoughts?

Two I can think of from recent years:

Provo-Bradley. Bradley had NOTHING left and was gone at the end of the 12th. Forget 15 rounds, 1 more round and Provo woulda stopped him.

Mosley-Cotto: Mosley was coming on strong, and Miggy was fading. 15-rounder and Mosley either wins a decision, or stops Cotto. Even without the 15 rounds, it was still arguably a draw.

Hard to imagine Holy lasting the distance in the first Bowe fight if it was 15-rounder.

Word. Bowe would have taken him out.

I don't agree. I can see why people think so, but the way i saw it was that Cotto knew he was well ahead and was comfortable and decided to just move and box and play around. It was a silly move and it gave Shane (who was the one fading at that point) enough incentive to finish the fight strong. If it were a 15 rounder, Cotto wouldn't have done that until the 14th round and by that time Shane may have been stopped anyway.

Trinidad vs De La Hoya- Trinidad would have won a more clear decision, or possibly stopped De La Hoya late.

De La Hoya vs Quartey- Oscar might have stopped Ike. But you never know because Oscar was punched out too.

Cotto vs Mosley- As X just said, Cotto was starting to fade and it's not impossible to see Mosley coming up with a late stoppage.

Garcia vs Peterson- Danny was badly and inexplicably fading from the 8th in a fight that was a slow pace... What might have been.

Khan vs Peterson- Peterson was tired, and Khan as we all know has no chin. What would have given?

Mayweather vs Cotto- Floyd would have actually had a chance to get a legitimate stoppage here. Cotto was basically done.

Bowe vs Holyfield 1- Evander would have surely been stopped. And brutally.

Mayweather vs Cotto is a good call. Same can be said of Mayweather-Mosley

Thing is though, Mayweather may have probably just coasted to decision wins even if he had them out on their feet, such was his mentality late in his career. As it is...he could have stopped either fighter if he had turned on the gas.

Trinidad would have won without controversy, I agree, but he wouldn't have stopped Oscar. I don't think Oscar would have stopped Ike either and Ike may have come back to win that one. Hard to say if the outcome would have changed over 15.

Way more inconclusive/unsatisfactory endings over 12 rounds than 15

    True.

I think 2007 Mayweather vs 2007 Cotto is a good fight. Floyd definitely wins. May have even stopped Cotto if he went for the kill. But I do agree that he had the chance to stop him in 2012. He wobbled him in the 12th and it was the last fight he actually threw combinations of punches.

Trinidad-De La Hoya for me is the obvious one. Maybe Tito doesn't stop Oscar, but I do think he would have dished out some punishment. Plus with Oscar running as much as he did, your right there would have been no controversy at all.

Hagler was fading too. I don't see a stoppage in that one even over 15, but Leonard would definitely have had some more "uncomfortable" moment sin the last 3 rounds.

Just to clarify (and not to just spoil the thread): do we assume that they had known beforehand it is going to be fifteen rounds, or do they hear after the final bell that tey have three more rounds to go (which seems to be the presupposition of the examples given?)

Not necessarily. Had Leonard - Hearns I for example been 12 rounds, nobody would be saying that it was inconclusive but that Hearns deserved his victory all the way and three extra rounds wouldn't have changed a thing.

Yeah, but Hagler Wasn't the Dude Coming Off a 3 Year Layoff, Either...12 Rounds was Something Leonard DEMANDED, to Get the Fight Made...

Not Saying Leonard Gets Stopped, but REED Thinks Hagler COULD have Done Enough to Overcome his Slow Start in the First 3-4 Rounds, to Earn a Clear Decision...

Exactly. More rounds=fighters pacing themselves differently.

Froch - Ward. The farmer won four of the last five rounds; the worst case of a schooling in modern times. By r.12, Ward was running round the ring. Give the farmer three more rounds, he pinches that fight.

Of course the whole premise here is a bit shaky we should acknowledge since presumably the fighters would all know ahead of time the fight were 15 rounds and not 12.

These examples would apply only if the three additional rounds were sprung on the fighters unexpectedly - the bell rings at the end of the 12th and the ref declares. . .. 3 more !

It's a false science. Most "distance" fights go the way they go because the combatants know the time frame involved.

Well it would certainly have been a less satisfactory and conclusive ending. We wouldnt still be talking about it as one the great back and forth battles of all time.

Agreed. Even in fights where one guy comes out blazing and hurts his opponent badly but doesn't do quite enough finish him off it's thought "one more round and he'd have knocked him out".

If that's the case why didn't they approach the 11th round that way?

What about in the case of the Morales-Barrera trilogy???

You don't think a stoppage could have been produced in one of those fights at least?

Of course, but they would not have fought at the pace they did knowing that they had 15 rounds to fulfill.

I don't know, man. With all that bad blood and PRIDE they had, I honestly think they would have gone at it the same way. Just a feeling, of course.

I call bullshit on this theory. It's filled with unfounded cunt and fuckery.

Ever seen Arguello vs Pryor or Ali vs Frazier? Even Marciano-Walcott. Don't act as though 15 rounds is like fighting 40+ rounds like they did back in jack Johnson's day. Fighters went balls to the wall from round 1 even in 15 round fights. Shit it's only 3 more rounds than 12. Are you telling me that guys on fight scheduled for 12 pace themselves more carefully compared with fighters of ten round fights? Of Course not.

You are right. Most guys could do an extra 9 minutes standing on their heads. What was I thinking. Luis Resto probably tosses and turns at night thinking that the mixed bottle probably wasn't even necessary. If only he had consulted the Slyentist , he too would have known that his man could have come out fresh as a daisy for the championship rounds. A few sips of tap-water, maybe even NO WATER.......but now an otherwise easy victory would have been badly tainted.
