Give me your lists. I'll give some examples below but in no particular order. I'll give my definite top ten list soon.

So this is two great talents fighting at or near the peak of their respective powers so examples like Ali-Holmes wont apply.

    Chavez Taylor 1
    Leonard Duran 1
    Leonard Hearns 1
    Hopkins-Calzaghe
    Jones-Hopkins (in retrospect)
    Chavez-Whitaker
    Pacquiao-Marquez 1
    Hagler-Hearns
    Leonard - Benitez

I'm probably missing some obvious ones, so feel free to add and compile your lists.

There's no footage of the fight, but Robinson-Gavilan.

    Others, not listed by you:

    Jones-Toney
Whitaker-Chavez: Chavez wasn't AT his peak, but he wasn't THAT far removed from his prime as his groupies will tell you.
    Sanchez-Gomez
    Chavez-Rosario
    Duran-DeJesus
    Camacho-Rosario

A bemusing Welsh homosexual vs a 43 year old no business in a list like that!

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Not only does it belong on the list....it belongs in the top 5.

Hopkins may not have been peak...but he still had incredible ATG talent even at age 43, evidenced by the Tarver and Pavlik fights. People may not like Calzaghe's style...but the Welsh fucker was supremely talented.

That ring, that night had so much talent in aggregation that I needed DARK sunglasses to even watch the fight!

Seriously, just no. If you think that was the best boxing has to offer I've no idea why you'd continue to watch the sport

Jones-Toney on paper was about as talented as it gets. What compromising it a bit is the talk of Toney being weight drained etc.

Still it deserves mention since both guys were undefeated at the time and both guys were wickedly talented.

Dude....boxing isn't just about action, drama and aesthetic violence...it's also the sweet science. If you don't appreciate the talent those guys have from a sweet science (purists) perspective then I wonder why you continue to watch the sport.

i appreciate the talent they had for what it was - a decently crafty volume puncher vs a 43 year old 2 weights removed from his prime weight. Putting that on the same page as charles-Moore, pep-saddler, Leonard-Duran I etc is an insult to 'the sweet science', I tells ya!

If it was a list starting from 2000 im not even certain it'd make the top 10

This is driven primarily by Calzaghe hate...and paying too much attention to age as opposed to ability. Anyway, let's not spoil the thread on this disagreement.

I think Leonard-Hearns is the winner of this thread though.

You have 2 of the top 3-4 welterweights of all time both at the peak of their abilities and top of their games.

Pretty COMICAL that HBO tried to hype De La Fishnets vs Ike the robot as the equivalent of Leonard-Hearns.

De La Hoya - Trinidad was likened to leonard Hearns as well. People are always looking for the new Leonard hearns.

Anyway...i could agree that Leonard-Hearns 1 is perhaps the greatest exhibition of boxing talent in one ring. Overall talent though....a Jones-Hopkins 1 edges it IMO.

Obviously Leonard Hearns 1 was a better fight, a more significant fight and feature more celebrated all time stars...but the thread isn't about "most significant matchups" or "best fights" it's about aggregated talent....and that's why I'd personally give Jones-Hopkins 1 the nod....as I believe that Jones was more talented than Leonard and Hopkins was more talented than Hearns.

Hut hates Calzaghe, you are talking to a brick wall whenever the topic involves the Welsh Wizard. He can't even admit he was good.

Yeah, Hut drives me nuts on the Calzaghe topic. Perhaps Scots hate the Welsh? Who knows.

Word. Putting this fight on a top 10 list is an insult. Pascal pretty much gave as close a performance against the same hopkins that calz fought.

A good champion, yes. He was vaguely revolting, but certainly a good champion. As i said, if the question was 'highest aggregation of talent in the ring since 2000' that fight would be borderline top 10. That wouldn't be true if Calzaghe wasn't 'good'.

But seeing Calzaghe's name on any list beside Charles, Pep & Duran is vomit inducing & shows a total lack of any capacity to put recent fighters in reasonable historical context. Sly!!!!! :will:
