Arguello at any weight. Just a better fighter. A better fighter by far, in reality.

Arguello wasn't on a different level at all... I'd favor Marquez. His footwork and counter punching give Arguello fits. Look at what Olivares was doing to Arguello before he got caught and he was basically doing a poor mans Marquez. Marquez gets hit a lot but he's never been stopped. I think he survives some rough moments and maybe a kd or two on the way to a clear UD.

Yeah, they were on the same level and would do about equally good against different opponents depending on styles. Between the two, I pick Arguello

    Arguello was much better.

Marquez became overrated due to the tetrology with Pac.

Marquez is in no way overrated. Tetrology with Pac are not his only accomplishments. I seem to recall him being the first (and I think only) man to stop Casamayor. He also beat Barrera, Juan Diaz, Katsidis, Gainer.

He's a solid guy. Of course the Cdogg-Xplosive troublemaking 80s loving duo will say that all those guys mentioned are shit...while still mentioning Kevin Ronney's destruction at the hands of the thin man as one of the key moments of Arguello's career.

Arguello is one of those guys that wouldn't get the same kind of admiration if he fought now.

That is because he was in several bruising, close give-and-take battles which he turned in his favor late. These days, that is seen as weakness. Now o be good you mustn't get hit at all, let alone lose rounds

Marquez is simply a very good fighter who had a great fighter's number. That's all he was.

Arguello was a better fighter. Period.

Ugtbk made a good point as is his usual custom. If arguello were fighting now he wouldn't be looked upon as favourably for the reasons Mr Kidding mentioned. I agree. On the other end, If Marquez were an 80s guy he would be given more credit for his accomplishments.

Now, I too would pick Arguello to win in a head to head due to his height and power advantages, but Marquez would be live due to his smarts, determination and his own power.

Marquez is one of the greatest fighters of this generation.

Obviously Sly's opinion is tainted because Floyd beat the lightweight version of JMM while the weighing 160 lbs. lol

I don't agree about Arguello not being looked at favorably if he fought today. Trinidad lost rounds and got dropped quite a bit but nobody cared because he won decisively, and he was p4p and a Hopkins and Jones win away from GOAT status at one point.

i agree. there would be some who would call arguello a bum just like they did trinidad. but the vast majority would recognize his greatness whether it was 1982, 2000 or 2016.

They're pretty similar fighters in many regards but head to head Arguello has fairly big advantages in both height/reach and punching power. I don't see how Marquez can overcome that even though it would be fascinating to watch.

Arguello WAS great, not denying that, I also favour him in this match up. Ugo makes a fair point though, if you see a fighter dropped or even wobbled these days you immediately see shit like "no chin!" and "bum!" get posted. It's incredibly annoying. Arguello WOULD have gotten the same treatment (maybe worse as he lost a few early ones) if he were fighting today.

Yeah, I remember him getting dropped by Skinny Hussein being a big black mark in him when he was coming up.

Casual fans respect longevity because they assume boxers should compete at the highest level for 10-15 years like team sports players. If a fighter can win and be a top guy long enough hell usually get respect and some fans. Boxers and promoters nowadays seem to exploit that.
