Two slick fast guys with one punch power meeting at a weight class that is above their best weights. The Robinson of the Maxim fight meets the Jones of Gotham....er I mean, of the Richard Hall fight. What transpires?
Robinson looked great in that fight until he basically fainted from the 90000 degree heat, he was whuppin Maxim's ass Jones is a very different animal than Joey Maxim, however and in this case the bigger man has a little too much .... Robinson was light against Maxim (conventional wisdom in those days was it was better for the guy coming up in weight to find a happy medium in order to keep his speed), def not a Light heavyweight... Did that wind up hurting him and play a part in his collapse from exhaustion? Who knows but he never truly wore 175... I figure Roy is just too big and comfortable at the weight and of course he carried his speed in spades at 175... You have to figure Jones stops him at some point
let's see. robinson was a welterweight who barely fought above 160. and rjj spent the majority of his career there.
So? Does the fact that Jones Jr fought at heavyweight against the one guy he was guaranteed to beat because that guy was fucking shit...make Jones Jr a viable matchup at heavyweight against anyone else? Of course not - he'd lose everytime against everyone else.
Clever point DM but not a fair comparison. Roy started out at 154lbs. Roy is not significantly bigger than Robinson.
Even though Robinson started out at 140-147lb? They're the same height but Jones Jr definately has the bigger, modern-day physique for an athlete / boxer. Jones Jr would 'pot-shot'...er...I mean....decision Robinson anywhere between 160-175
In Robinson's "prime" LHW weight, he was 157 lbs against Joey Maxim. So yeah, LHW Roy would win pretty handily
Semantics. I didn't mean he fought at 175lbs literally. I mean he competes at that weight class. You know what I meant cdoggy dogg.
word, but in a mythical matchup it isn't just semantics.. Jones was a comfortable 175 pounder in an age of 24 hour weigh-ins, so he was routinely fighting in the 180s... Robinson maxed out at middleweight, even when he fought a Light Heavyweight He was able to outbox Maxim because Maxim, though a good boxer with a great jab, wasn't a fast guy and couldn't deal with the smaller man's speed... and then Robinson passed out... Maxim was also a light puncher... He beat guys with his jab and his defense, he wasn't a banger... It's hard to imagine Robinson at 157 pounds having that much success against Maxim contemporaries like Ezzard Charles or Archie Moore, they were both quicker than Maxim and had real power (especially Moore) ... Roy may not have been as big a banger at 175 as Archie was, but he could still hit a lot harder than Maxim ... The way I see it, we're dealing with a crucially undersized guy whose only example against anybody in this class is a good but not great fighter who happened to have the perfect set of weaknesses to minimize the inherent danger... We don't have any reason to assume Robinson could comfortably wear a full 175 so we can only go by the middleweight... The middleweight is too small against the Lt. Heavy Jones
Hell, never mind great legendary guys like Archie and Ezzard, put Robinson in with a contender of the time like Irish Bob Murphy and he might get stopped or at least rocked often enough to lose a decision because the guy is so much bigger and hit so hard and will swing for the fences
