Jason Bourne the highly anticipated fifth installment in the franchise opened to a solid $60 million debut, which ranks the second best in the series. After 9 year hiatus both Matt Damon and the original director return to the franchise after they swore that 'The Bourne Ultimatum' wraped Bourne's story and will never go back to it. But money talks, right Matt Damon? Film had a budget of $120 million and grossed an additional $50 million in the foreign market for a three days total of $110 million globally. The question is how well the film will perform next weekend when Suicide Squad opens to big business (predictions are putting it between $135-$160 million).

Underperforming in its sophomore week is Star Trek Beyond which had a 60% drop and made only $24 million. The film has grossed so far $105 million domestically and a timid $54.8 million at the international market. Its fate rest solely now on how well it can perform in China, Mexico & Japan...three markets were the prior films didn't performed that great, but China alone rewarded the last one, "Into Darkness" with $57 million. It is now highly doubtful that this film will recoup its investment. Time to go smaller in budget and give what hardcore fans want: character interactions and solid plot instead of lots of expensive action sequence which have never been this franchise trademark. If i was a studio honcho i would assign a $100 million or less budget to the next one, bring some old popular character aboard and develop the plot around that premise. Then release the film not in the summer, but maybe March or November. Even if it grosses a low $200 million plus worldwide, it still will show some profit.

In the third place Bad Moms which debuted to great business with $23.4 million. Since the Mila Kunis had a budget of just $20 million, this debut puts it on track for a possible $65 million final gross or earning thrice its budget.

Even though The Secret Life of Pets descended from the 2nd spot last week to the fourth position this weekend, it only had a 38% drop grossing a solid $18.2 million. That brings its domestic total to $296 million and $395 million worldwide. It will pass the $300 million domestically & the $400 million globally by midweek. Not bad for a $75 million budget film!

Rounding up the top five, Lights Out grossed $10.8 million for a current domestic total of $42.8 million which given its micro budget of $4.9 million, you can bet that we will see a sequel next year.

Ice Age Collision Course added $10.5 million to its two week's total of $42.1 million. But like I said last week, this $105 million budget production might look like a flop domestically, but it is a GIGANTIC HIT overseas. It currently stands at $253 million worldwide and counting, which warrants yet another sequel.

The same cannot be said about the Ghostbusters reboot: while it added $9.8 million this week to its $105 million current domestic total, the film will not do better than the original did overseas and that puts it in the red tape. At a current $52 million gross overseas, it puts its current total at a disappointing $158.1 million. it still needs $130 million MORE just to recoup its budget, let alone show any profit and at this stage, not matter how the producers and actresses bitch out about anti-feminist campaign, the truth is that film is a flop no matter how you look at it.

In total contrast the film that everybody wrote off, but audiences have somehow quietly maintained afloat, The Legend of Tarzan surpassed the $300 million mark worldwide and if keeps this pace it might, just might recoup its expensive budget. Even if it doesn't, these numbers should not be ignored by the studio. if they are smart they can greenlight a smaller budgeted sequel film with the same cast (lets say a $70 million production, with little to none expensive CGI effects and more stunts). Even if the sequel grosses only half of the first one, it will still be a solid hit and can build a franchise.

No. It had a $144 million budget plus an undisclosed amount for marketing (which could be easily an additional $60 million or more). But the film needs to make twice its budget to recoup the investment.

So how did you get the 280 million for them to recoup their investment? 144+60=$204 million

Going by HOLLYWOOD's ACCOUNTING practices....The original Spider man made 800 million dollars with a 120 millino budget...but according to Hollywood accounting..they still haven't taken a profit.

One of the Harry Potter movies even had lost 150+ million...
