I dunno how much of a hunch that gives. Foster was a different beast than Kov. I think Foster is THE worst possible matchup for Ward. I think Bob violently stops Ward inside of 6.
Foster ends this within 7 rounds. Punches too hard, is too strong, and has the quickness to catch Ward.
Foster's blindingly fast, piston jab would prevent Ward from getting anything going, and he doesn't have the pop to keep Bob at bay. Foster walks him up down, and puts him to sleep.
Question (because I honestly don't know): How many Bob Foster Light heavyweight opponents were better than either Kovalev or Ward? How many of them that were beaten violently in the mid rounds were as good as Kovalev or Ward?
Honestly, Foster never beat a light heavy as good as Kov or Ward. Doesn't change the fact that neither has beaten anyone near as good as Foster either, and that prime Bob should be comfortably favored over either one.
Fair enough. Still since we never saw Foster destroy a guy as good as either of these two guys we shouldn't just assume that he'd destroy one of these two guys. Beat them? Sure.
While Ward has a good defense, it's clear that he can be hit against a pinpoint puncher with good accuracy. Foster had that brutal placement on his shots to go along with the heavy hands. I could see a nasty KO happening to Ward here. I think he'd make it somewhat interesting early with his ring smarts and movement, but it's difficult to see him going the distance here, let alone winning.
I dunno about Foster destroying Kov. Kov has a dependable chin. Ward? I have very little doubt that Dre's chin couldn't withstand Foster's power. And once Ward is in serious trouble against Foster, it's curtains. Foster is right up there with Tyson, Louis, Leonard, as one of the best finishers of all time.
I actually think that Kovalev would fuck up Foster. I think Kovalev is tougher, even at light heavy. You see a tough fighter usually remains tough even when he goes up in weight....so I don't buy this "he's only fragile at the higher weight" bullshit. Evander remained tough as nails. Same with Toney. Same with pacquiao same with Mayweather same with Duran Leonard and many others. Foster in a war with Kovalev gets his no hairline having, awkward Ken Norton lean styling, spindle legged ass torn up!
But yes, I could see Foster stopping Ward but at the same time I see Kovalev as being as good a finisher as Foster was and he couldn't do it
We know, Sly. We know your MO by now. None of the old time fighters could fight. Floyd presided over the deepest talent pool in boxing history, and this era is swimming in talent. We know. We know.
Nah... Leonard and Hearns could FIGHT! Same with Hagler. Same with Ali, Robinson, Whitaker and many others. It's just that not ALL old timers could beat ALL modern fighters like most of you seem to suggest.
