My Dad was there around 68-69, and while he loves "Apocalypse Now", I think he see's it as more of a cartoon version of what he went through.

"Platoon" is the most accurate depiction of the war as far as his experiences go, according to him.

I love "Full Metal Jacket", but I remember him really hating it at the time it came out, though I think he's come around a bit on it since.

Apocalypse Now probably isn´t a true ´war movie´ as such - just aa metaphor for being sane in an insane world.
Id go as far as to say Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill and countless other Vietnam-based war movies are probably more accurate...

Good call. I preferred A Few Dollars More though personally.

Yeah, it certainly was made on a much more epic scale, with a higher degree of difficulty then the other films.

He also thought "Hamburger Hill" was kind of shit. He loves "We Were Soldiers" because that was his unit (though a few years before he was there), but I'm not a big fan of it myself.

I enjoy it but ive never real got apocalyse now...which I felt better about when I watch the making of and realized coppola didn't either. 'I don't know what this movie is about....im making a complete calamity here...no really! Why won't anyone believe me, I'm seriously contemplating shooting myself!'

Maybe thatspart of the allure and intrigue: as Noble said, its quite inaccurate throughout if you look hard enough....its technically NOT a war-movie as such.
The character of Colonel Kilgore for example, calling in a napalm-strike so his men can surf the beach: that´s a metaphor for war-mongering USA.

But yeah, Hearts Of Darkness - I enjoyed that documentary - youd never get away with making a movie like that now.

I think coppola has said that subsequently that he feels partly responsible for ending the 70s 'golden age' with that film because the studios became so alarmed by the power directors had gathered to themselves by that point, as kinda exemplified by the sheer ott indulgence of that shoot, that they really reigned them in the years immediately following. Power shifted from directors to producers or even committees of producers with directors losing a lot of control over script choice, casting, film length and the rest

Thats a recurring thing with kubrick films by many accounts. The first time leaves you cold, the third time piques your interest and you end up watching it innumerable times and liking it more each time. Certainly true of me and the few ive given third chances to so far

    Completely correct.
Hence why the 1970s was the real, last golden age of movies and not the 1990s as Pantsthony thinks....

I think James Cameron is the last film-maker to really get cart-blanche to do what he really wants, and spend as much as he wants (for better or for worse).

Even somebody as proven as Spielberg has to live within budget restraints...and all the comic book movies, as much as they might cost, have to all stick to a specific creative AND financial formula.

The Wachowski weirdos still kind of try and get away with it based on their "Matrix" success, but the movie studios kick themselves in the ass every time they put another dud out.

Heaven's Gate had a hand in that to. The story of the making of that is equally insane to that of Apocalypse.

It's not necessarily my favorite (though it is one of my favorites) but I think The Godfather might be as perfect a film
    as there is

I now look at it as flawed and overrated....not bad by any means, but definately not the 'sacred cow' everyone makes it out to be.

I've never seen the Godfather or any of the sequels. I have zero interest in mafia stories, even though as a child I lived on the same street as a high ranking mob member, and my father was 'politely persuaded' to sell his business to a group of 'Italian businessmen' back in the 70's. What is the appeal?

    Ditto.
Never 'got' it....especially The Sopranos which just comes off as comically cartoon Italian mobster fun at best....

The Godfather is not a Mafia story. It's more a story about Family and how different generations run things different and about a family's decline.

That sounds even more boring than a mafia story.

One of my Top 5 personal favorites, even though I will never call it the greatest movie ever, but one of THE best scifi films ever made as it has plot holes as big as the mothership. This was the only film Steven Spielberg wrote and directed from an idea of his own. To me it is his best film, even though he now kinda of regrets some decisions he made writing the film. Watching this movie on its weekend release was like attending a gathering to see the pope: it was and felt like you were attending an EVENT, not a popcorn film. Very touching and emotional climax for a big budget film. This was the film that deserved to be nominated for Best Picture of the Year in 1977 more so than the winner 'Annie Hall'. The special effects are still awesome 40 years later.

Absolutely! Two scenes in particular are among the best scenes ever in the history of cinema: The very first scene with the French Farmer and the Jew Hunter and the Bar scene. The tension of those scenes is palpable and the acting...phenomenal.

I agree with Cdogg though, whether or not you are into that genre, Godfather may well be the most perfect film ever made. You can't find a flaw.

    The tavern scene is good.
The opening farm scene is Waltz doing his usual shtick that he does...

Waltz was outstanding in that scene. Check out the extremely subtle shift in expression from pleasant to serious when he says "You're sheltering enemies of the state, are you not?"

Very few actors in history could have pulled off that scene as he did.

Keith Moon, late drummer and legendary mad-man-partier/hotel-smasher-upper of The Who summed-up his praise and plaudits perfectly when he once said ´I´m the greatest Keith Moon-type drummer in the world´

The same can be said for Christoph Waltz as an actor.
