It has typical 50s acting which was always a little over-the-top and some cheese dialogue, but this is not a film that watch for its tour de force performances, but by its spectacle. And as such it delivers. Still head and shoulders over the remake.

I think Atheists are pre-disposed to not like it because of the Tale of Christ that's interwoven in the story. But if you can get over that...you can't tell me that the acting and the dialogue is bad. The guys that play Ben Hur (Heston), Messala (Boyd) are superb as well as the Sheik, governor Pontius Pilate, the Consol and a few others. It's the classic tale of survival, revenge and redemption.

Anyway...to each his own I guess. For me it's one of the greatest films ever made.

I'm actually siding with Sly. Haven't seen it years, but I'd imagine it'd be a bit snobby to pick apart the dialogue of Ben Hur. As Sly said, it's easy to dismiss it as a Christ movie, but it's essentially a movie about revenge and redemption.... basically, Gladiator borrowed/stole its revenge theme from Ben Hur.

Its one of the best epics.

I couldn't care less about the religious aspect, just think it's very dated in terms of the acting

Booolsheeeet! You saw Christ and faith and miracles and repentance and forgiveness and then deemed that it was "cheesy". Just admit it.

Nah. Cdogg and I agree that Mahalia Jackson is one of the greatest singers ever and she is all about Jesus.
