Despicable Me 3 tops box office, Will Farrell bombs

No surprise that Despicable Me 3 easily took the #1 spot at the box office. The only surprise is that it came up short of expectations. Its $75.4 million debut is far below of the $115 million opening of 'Minions' or the prior 'Despicable Me 2' $83 million opening. The studio was expecting an $80 million debut while some industry predictors were saying it could land with a $100 million debut. Maybe the franchise is starting to show some overexposure fatigue?

In the distant second place Edgar Wright's Baby Driver over-performed with better than expected numbers. It took $21 million over the weekend and since its opening on Wednesday it has grossed already $30 million which is more than the entire run of Wright's most celebrated film, the cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs the World. The film had glowing reviews from critics and audiences apparently loved it too.

In the third spot Transformers: The Last Knight had a 62% plunge from last week and added just $17 million to its domestic cume which currently stands at $102 million, still lower than the weekend opening of 2009's sequel 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. But since its most profitable market is outside USA none of this matters: the $217 million budget film has now doubled that amount worldwide and will soon start showing real profit once the undisclosed marketing costs are recouped too (that could be another $200 million!).

Continuing its wondrous performance like an Energizer bunny, DC Wonder Woman shows no sign of fatigue as it wowed audiences with $16.1 million in its 5th weekend for a domestic cume of $346.6 million, besting all the numbers of prior DCEU films. Globally it stands at $708 million and within a week or two will beat 'Suicide Squad' total box office grosses of $745 million to become the second highest grosser of the current DCEU movies.

Rounding up the top five is Cars 3 which grabbed $9.5 million for a domestic total of $120 million. Worldwide it has grossed only $173 million, which makes it Pixar's lowest grossing film so far.

Bombing in its debut is Will Ferrell & Amy Poehler's The House which crashed on the sixth spot with just $9 million, making it Ferrel's worst opening ever and the newest casualty in the R-rated comedies of 2017 which has seen quite a few failing miserably. This wild party is over.

Anchorman is the only funny Will Ferrell movie, IMO.

Ironically, his best movie isn't even a comedy. His best movie is Stranger Than Fiction

The Other guys, Step Brothers and Old School are all really good. Talledega Nights was ok. That second movie Marky "He's a fucking chank" Mark is the only extra unfunny movie of his I can recall.

Agreed. I never thought he was funny. Funny guys say clever funny shit to be funny. Will Ferrell uses stupid childish mentality mixed with over the top screaming to be funny and it's not.
