You'd have to stretch argument that even prime Oscar was better than Curry. Saying 07 Oscar was better than prime Curry is simply talking out your ass to defend Floyd.

Curry wouldn't beat Floyd because he's "better". Clearly Floyd is the historically better fighter.

But Curry was a better welterweight, and not only did he look more impressive at 147 than Floyd, his 147 resume is more impressive.

He was a little too big, and rangy for Floyd at 147, on top of being very talented.

But why am I debating with a man who thinks of Floyd as better than Ray Robinson?

Even if we concede that Oscar won the Tito fight, one could still argue that makes him 1-3 against the 4 elite welters he faced.

DLH was a beast at 135-140. Very overrated at 147.

Curry was stopped by Honeyghan at 147lb and one shot KO'd by McCallum at 154lb. The oscar that destroyed Vargas at 154lb hit harder than McCallum, certainly with his left hook, and would have cold cocked curry. Mayweather beat that same oscar at 154lb (Mayweather was Oscar's very next fight).

I never said Floyd was better than Robinson....I said he was a better boxer than Robinson was ( ring generalship, hit and not get hit, etc) which is undeniable fact. Robinson was a far greater offensive fighter though....perhaps the best ever in that regard.

Oscar was not the same guy against Floyd that he was against Vargas.

I'd pick the Oscar that destroyed Mayorga to destroy Curry at 154 though. how about you?

Why not? All Curry proved at 154lb is that he could be knocked out.

I'd pick Starling (who lost twice to Curry even though the first fight is disputed) to beat every Mayweather opponent. A fat Starling nearly beat a prime Michael Nunn for Christ sakes

LOL at the thought of Starling vs. McGregor

A fat Cory Spinks nearly beat a prime Jermaine Taylor and Zab Judah knocked out Spinks...who Floyd handled easily. Floyd handled Ginger easily and Canelo beat Cotto who beat Martinez who beat Pavlik.

Starling was a very good fighter indeed, I'm not trying to take anything away from him but it's not like Floyd only beat Scrubs.

At the end of the day, I think the biggest issue with Curry is that he didn't really have a 2nd gear. He was a very efficiently economic puncher, but he was ONLY an economic puncher. He either KO'd opponents with a single well-timed punch or rhythmically drummed on them at a controlled pace. He never proved he could win a big fight when forced to compete outside his comfort zone.

The big issue I had with all the hype around Curry is that it seemed to come too fast. IMO, he didn't look all that great around the time he won the title - the Starling fight was somewhat sloppy and indecisive, and Hwang had him down and in serious trouble. I felt there were still unanswered questions about his toughness and resilience heading into the Honeyghan fight - and needless to say, that outcome did little to dispel those concerns.

As I've said in other threads, I don't think Curry deserves to be favored in MMs with ATG WWs, or even ones the level of Cotto or Mosley - they were blood and guts warriors who not only proved they could win tough battles with elite fighters, but also could be expected to force Curry into the kind of fight he never really proved he could win at the top level.
