    ...but didn't.

My missus has never seem Saving Private Ryan so today we watched it.
After she asked if this won Best Picture for 1998 and initially I said "oh yeah it won a load"

Then I checked and discovered Shakespeare In Love won that year.

    Wtf?

What other years did you think the wron nominee(s) got the nod?

'How Green was My Valley" won over 'Citizen kane' considered by many the greatest American film ever. No one remembers the winner.
"Ghandi" won over "E.T.: The Extraterrestrial"
"Chariots of Fire" won over 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'
"Annie Hall" won over "Star Wars"
"High Noon" did not won Best Picture but the forgettable circus film "The Greatest Show on Earth"did.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" was the undeniable favorite to win, but lost to the musical "Oliver!"
"Fargo" lost to the borefest "The English Patient" to the surprise of many.

Anyone thinks that 'Around the World in 80 days" was a better film than 'The Ten Commandments" or 'Giant"?

Annie hall is way better than Star Wars.

I think Jurrasic park should have won over Forrest Gump - it wasn't even nominated

Leo should have won Best Actor for Wolf of Wall Street over Matthew McConaughey, but of course they gave it to the later because he played an AIDS patient.

Jurassic Park was the year before Gump.

Meaning that it would have had to beat Schindler's List.

I do agree that Jurassic Park is a better movie than Gump, and I definitely think it should have been nominated for Best Picture.

The most egregious snub I can think of is Do The Right Thing not even being NOMINATED in 1989, let alone not winning.

It should have won in 89. Definitely the best movie of that year IMO. It's a top 5 movie of the entire 80s.

And what's sad is, it's still a HIGHLY relevant movie in 2017.

I agree that Rocky shouldn't have won in 76, but I disagree on which movie should have gotten it.

I think Network should have won.

Little Miss Sunshine should have won over The Departed in 06. The Departed was a huge letdown.

The Social Network should have won over The King's Speech in 2010.

The Imitiation Game DEFINITELY should have won over Birdman aka THE WORST movie to win an Oscar.

Hell or High Water should have won this past year. Great movie, while Moonlight was some boring fag shit.

Do the right thing was not even the best movie of 89, let alone the 80s.

    In 1989 you had:

    Glory
Born on the Forth of July
    Field of Dreams
    Lean on Me
    Parenthood
    Driving Miss Daisy
    My Left Foot
    Dead Poets Society.

Do the right thing aint gonna be nominated with a field like that.

LMAO @ Field of Dreams, Parenthood, Lean on Me, and Driving Miss Daisy better movies than Do The Right Thing.

    Ridiculous.

You probably never even seen those movies. Just like you never saw the 2016 best picture list if you think Hell or High water should have won.

I've seen every last one of those movies, none are on the level of Do The Right Thing.

Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture because it was a NON-threatening, heart warming movie about a "good negro" in Morgan Freeman and his relationship with his boss.

Do The Right Thing is threatening, in your face, and tackles REAL race issues that are still prevalent in society to this day.

It's a masterpiece of a movie, and virtually every movie buff agrees with that.

Hell or High Water was an awesome movie. Even better upon second viewing.

Basically, Moonlight was THE WORST movie on the list, and I say that as a black man.

If they wanted to give Best Picture to a black movie, I wouldn't have any problem with Fences or Hidden Figures winning, but of course, the homos that run Hollywood have their gay agenda, so Moonlight wins.

Fuck Spike Lee. I'm glad that self-important rat faced fuck hasn't gotten anything.

Color Purple was a horrendous mishap. It wasn't just the best picture that year, it was the best picture by FAR

LA Confidential should have won over Titanic in 97, but you know it didn't stand a chance.

Titanic is overrated, but I don't consider it one of the worst winners. It was a quality movie, especially the second half.

I don't care if you're a fan of Spike or not, DTRT is a cinematic classic.

And yes, Color Purple should have won.

DTRT was good up until the point it lost all it's credibility at the end, when everyone destroyed their own neighborhood. Just because it tackles real issues, doesnt mean it's greater than other movies that tackle real issues. And spike lee is a shit actor and him taking the lead probably cost the movie everything.

Yes, Spike Lee's presence on screen destroys his own movies. He should keep that rat face behind camera.

The ending was a metaphor for destruction of the black community.

As for Spike's acting, yes, in a perfect world he would have taken his ugly face out of the lead and given the role to someone like Denzel. But in SPITE of Spike's role on screen, it's still a masterful movie.

Surprised that no one has mentioned one of the most obvious ones - Dances with Wolves winning over Goodfellas in 90. Laughable.

I think it's already been mentioned, but Fargo definitely should have won in 96.

Apocalypse Now should have won over Kramer and Kramer in 79. That's an obvious one.

This one is gonna be HIGHLY controversial, but I think Chinatown should have won over GF II in 74.
