Seriously though...Superhero films are great escapism entertainment. They have value.

You seem to think that they are hurting the film industry...but they are not. There are still a ton of critics pix type films that are churned out every year. What's the harm in having big action blockbusters if Hollywood is still producing the high acting quality deep storied Artistic films? Surely its a win win.

Please... there comes a point where escapism becomes so pervasive that it morphs into a kind of mass opiate ... we're long past that point ... the days when the big screen held a monopoly on artistic merit are long gone ... the small screen is where it's at now

What passes for high quality art in Hollywood these days is pummeled by the small screen

Agreed, but that's not because of superhero flicks...that's because TV has evolved because of producers realizing that they can spend big budget on a TV show (after HBO and Netflix set a high standard)...and if you spend money and effort making a good TV show it'll always beat a Big screen film...because you have so many episodes and so you can afford to flesh things out properly. Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones etc...could never have been done properly in a 2 hour film or even in a trilogy.

Superhero films being produced by the shitload is a symptom of Hollywood being utterly decimated by the rise of brilliant TV

Back in the day TV used to be unconnected episode after unconnected episode. Nowadays most TV is one continual story. There is also no longer this class system between actors...where A-Listers are exclusively in film and B actors are exclusively on TV screens. Like I said...shows like Game Of Thrones have Hollywood style budgets. So when this type of thing starts to happen it'll always beat Cinema....who used to have the monopoly on complete stories, big budgets and top actors.

They are not shit. Today's TV beats even Hollywood from past decades.

There is no film in history that beats Game of Thrones for one thing. Not to mention Breaking bad, Homeland and a whole host of modern TV shows. Netlfix, HBO etc have changed the game.

Truthfully Rooster, by your own admission you didn't watch GOT from the beginning. You started in season 4 or something. That's like watching a great film and starting it an hour in. You can't appreciate a story like that.

i, for one, refuse to commit suicide

i get that the superhero movies are becoming repetitive, & i get that some people are just immediately turned off by people dressed in capes. - but it's just like myths. nobody looks down on Homer's Odyssey just because it has a cyclops & a guy who's invulnerable in every part of his body except for his heel. art is art, & if a movie has good writing, character, direction, & is adding something new, then it's a good movie

like i said before, life's too short. i already gave up a few hours of my life on that tv show, & previously i'd tried reading the first 100 pages or so of the first book, & i just got more & more pissed off

You didn't give it a good shot. The show "gets" you if you watched it from the beginning before knowing anything else.

Valid points from both sides. Big budget superhero films generates an obscene amount of revenue. That is why they keep making more plus that was Marvel's strategy from the start: an interconnected multi-characters universe. It worked in the comicbooks and it worked in the big screen. That said, its imitators (DCEU) have delivered low quality films and deserves all the backlash they got. However they also made some dough for its studio (well, except Justice League which flopped) so superhero films are not going anywhere as long as they keep making tons of money worldwide.

As for the 'serious films' that usually are made on lower budgets, I agree with Clogg in the sense that most of them are crap and could very well could have been done for less money on cable tv. And I will add that the factor that makes them less appealing than the dramas of 70s is that they have become too politicized. Just look at the 10 BEST PICTURE Oscar nominees this year: A gay love story (between an adult man and teenager boy which in the age of #MeToo and the backlash Milo Stephanopoulos got NO ONE DARED TO CRITICIZE!!!), A Grinding Nemo zoofilia movie where the handicap (mute) woman got help from a communist man, a black lady and a gay man, a film about white racism, a feminist film, a film that portrayed a once revered great leader as he is pathetically painted now, an anti-war war movie, a black horror film just cause it was made by Blacks (Lives Matter!), etc. All those films, except Dunkirk, could have made the Netflix film of the month and NO ONE WOULD HAVE NOTICED!!!

It's a vastly overrated show about swords, demons, dragons and tits. ... for gullible 'TV-boxset' wankers who follow the crowd.

I lasted 11/2 episodes before finally (and correctly) concluding the above.

Oh so because YOU didn’t like it and the fact it’s a mainstream hit means everyone who does are a bunch of gullible followers with no taste or free thinking opinions? I guess everyone has to agree with you in order to be right.
