There are too many viable name opponents in the division and Thurman has fought too many of them to be so pessimistic. He’s never actually ducked anybody. Athletes aren’t going to wasn’t to pursue boxing if it’s just a pedestal for people to throw shit at every chance.
Thurman has earned the benefit of the doubt, IMO. It sucks that he got injured but he'll hopefully have a tune up fight and then sign the contract for Spence after that.
I don't buy into the narrative that thurman is some prove guy at 147 with the top resume Basically he has beaten porter and garcia Spence stopped the guy who beat porter and just stopped another guy who fought on even terms with garcia
Beyond This, Thurman’s Keeping the Division In Fucking LIMBO... He’s Got 2 of the 4 Belts and LITERALLY Hasn’t Defended Either for More than a Year Now, with Not Sooooooo Much as the NAME of a Fucking Comeback Opponent Being Rumored... While REED Agrees Thurman is the Most PROVEN Current Welter, That Doesn’t Give Him the Right to STALL the Best Division In the Sport... Pretty Soooooon, the WBA and WBC Need to Pressure Thurman’s Ass...If He’s Hurt, Let the Highest Rated Contenders Vie for Interim Titles....And if Health Just Can’t Seem to Find Thurman Again, Strip His Ass.... Ultimately, World Champions Make Title Defenses, Something Thurman Hasn’t and WONT Be Doing In the Foreseeable Future... He’s NOT Owed or Entitled to Shit... REED
word. He's earned the right to be given the benefit of the doubt and not be called a "ducker", however, he can't be allowed to keep the titles indefinitely and hold up the rest of the division in the process whether he's hurt or not.
I'd be pretty shocked if Thurman was still around in four years. It seems like he's just waiting on one or two more money fights, then will retire.
agREED... Like Rocky III, Thurman’s Lost the “Eye of the Tiger”...And Apollo Creed’s Not Available to Help Retrieve It... REED
when youve accomplished so much and beaten such stellar opposition for years and years you tend to lose motivation
Agreed. I mean, Thurman has amassed a resume that would make Ezzard Charles envious. The guy has nothing left to prove...
Thurman to a young up-and-comer 20 years from now.. "Don't you know who I am? I'm One Time Thurman! I made my bones when you were goin out with cheerleaders!"
I think Thurman has just proven to be mentally weak. I suspect it's more a case of him realizing that it's harder to REMAIN champion vs BECOMING champion, as opposed to the money and fame. He doesn't have much fame-star power, and I doubt he's made 'set for life' type of money either. Even though he hasn't lost yet, his aura of invincibility is gone. He talks like a guy who's lost belief in himself, particulaly when Errol Spence is brought up...I remember when he first stepped on the scene with his whole "You better not duck me son," and "I got an 0 and I ain't afraid to let it go."... What happened to that guy? Now, I see a man who simply doesn't BELIEVE in himself. And when he's asked about Spence, forget it. He gets dumber than Donald Trump as he hilariously tries to justify not taking that fight. At this point, it's just transparent that he doesn't believe he can win that fight. And even if Spence moves up, there will come another 'on the rise' top young talent and Thurman is 29 now, super inactive, and probably not in his prime anymore. Athletic fighters typically begin to lose reflexes as they near 30. I think he's pretty much finished. He'll likely retire Prince Naseem style after taking a fight with some no hoper, probably winning a decision in unimpressive fashion and then just going away.
I like you Puerto, but youre maki g way too much assumption when it c9mes to thurman. Sure it sucks that hes injured and he hasnt fought for a while, but lets wait a bit and see what he does next
Also the idea that guys are remotely shot physically age 29 is absurd. Fighters age way better these days. 30 is prime, I hardly see any top boxers these days that are past prime at 29 unless they've taken heavy punishment. The only examples I can think of recently are Gonzalez and Garcia, but that seemed to be moving up in weight more than anything. Manny and Floyd were completely prime age 30, Lomachenko is as fast and sharp as ever age 30, as are most elite fighters. Fuck even Khan, who is not elite like the aforementioned 3, and has been beaten senseless a few times, is still prime physically. And Spence for example, who has only just got out of prospect/contender status, is only a year younger than Thurman. The idea that a fighter is past his best at 29 is a very antiquated view, 29 is absolutely prime, even early 30's is still prime in most cases, with many elite fighters showing no signs of slippage in their early 30's.
I've always felt like Thurman lately sounded real weird in the way he talks about not fighting Spence.. it's like he's BRAGGING about not fighting him "This is my COME BACK year" or "Get some" then to say "I see you young buck" and calling him SON etc.. they are like 2 years apart or something.. Thurman talks like he is a 20 year vet and Spence is some young kid. they are like the same age! I wish we could see this fight.. i want to see Pony tail LEVELED
It isn't just Thurman, to be fair. Garcia and Porter are in the same boat. All ducking Errol Spence, shamelessly. Thurman has no excuse, though. Spence is a champion and yet he isn't on the "to do" list. Fuck outta here.
