The Hollies! Fleetwood Mac didn't become stars until the American guy and his Wiccan sheep girlfriend took over and completely altered their sound Before that they were as big a deal as Savoy Brown
Jeff Beck... great guitarist He's made 50 records... only one of them is listenable (Blow by Blow) Ten Years After... good grief ... you're already knee deep in mediocre dross
Jings! The laddie who started this fyewd should change his name tae ‘French Mustard’ the way he’s SURRENDERING. He has let the Queen doon.
Magus has done an exceptional troll job here but it can't be denied that the UK has had a pretty seismic impact on popular music when you take into account its size in comparison to the USA.
The '60s showed UK dominated essily so let's move on and consolidate in the next decade: David Bowie Elton John Paul McCartney John Lennon Genesis King Crimson Deep Purple Electric Light Orchestra Jethro Tull Led Zeppelin Yes Genesis Black Sabbath Rod Stewart Nick Drake Thin Lizzy See it works like a wave of attacks, each one seeing over anything the USA offered, and we havent even got to the fuckin mid-70s yet. (N.B. look above where Led Zeppelin are: Class C, mothafocka That.shows you how fuckin easy this is)
So, as we see it, US artists that are really any good from the 1960s: Bob Dylan The Byrds The Beach Boys The Doors Jimi Hendrix Creedance Clearwater Revival Then a level or two down: Captain Beefheart Frank Zappa Janis Joplin Simon & Garfunkel Down another level: Buffalo Springfield The Grateful Dead Jefferson Airplane The Mamas & The Papas Tim Buckley Sly & The Family Stone And I´m afraid, as awesome as all of those are, they don´t stack up against UK artists from the same era I listed, 1963-69. That´s not opinion, that´s fact. I know it. cdogg187 knows it. (Hut*Hut hasn´t heard of any of these bands) Prepare then, for when the USA made a comeback in the next decade and it was on!
See, you´re fallen into a trap that isn´t even there: you´ve got confused and your mindset into thinking I don´t like any of the bands or artists from the USA when in fact, the exact opposite is true.
All of this flowery faggotry will not save you or your thread from the essential truth: there's not any genuine debate about the superiority of the American output. It simply is
So, moving on, I´ll also give you: Stevie Wonder as the sole Class A, top-of-the-tree artist from the entire decade of 1970-79. However, there are a tons of back-ups to keep the US counter-attack moving (remember, this is only the first 1/3 of the decade): Alice Cooper The Allman Brothers Band Crosby, Stills & Nash Lou Reed Then, a level-down: Mountain Grand Funk Railroad James Gang MC5 Chicago The Carpenters Flying Burrito Brothers Funkadelic Santana So, you can see - a lot of great names but spreading somewhat thinly compared to the UK artists, who, from 1968-73 fucking owned the music business. Owned it.
I haven't stopped laughing since I saw that you were still posting replies to this topic. Perhaps someday I'll read them.
However, this upsurge in American talent in what I call ´The Interim Years´ (circa 1971-75) is very short-lived as the UK, once again produsing some vastly superior musical talent: Brian Eno leading the charge with your 10cc, Cockney Rebel/Steve Harley as reserves while the big guns of Queen and Roxy Music making the big noise. The US comparatives during this era? Bruce Springsteen Patti Smith Tom Waits
See, again though, the sheer size of the USA means it's always going to have an advantage in overall output. Put the best 5 UK bands vs the best 5 US bands and it's incredibly close.
